Hingis: Could she make it in the WTA today?

Martina Hingis never had a power game, she used finesse and placement when being Number 1.
During the weekend, I saw her on Tennis Channel playing against a 20 year old in World Team Tennis. Her opponent is a good doubles player, ranked with her twin sister. Hingis won 5-1 and had her oponent running from side to side. Hingis was hittingt the ball pretty hard and with good angles

So, how would she do in the Womens Tour today? Is she too old already?

What? Who, other than a healthy Serena (physically and mentally), is going to beat her consistently? She would still be the mentally toughest, steadiest player in the game today. I think she'd be at least top 2-3, if not #1 today.

The Hingis and Serena head to head record is 7-6 in favor of Serena. Hingis didn't have a problem playing against power and I have no doubt she would do just as well today as she did a decade ago.

LOL Hingis came back in 2006 when she was 6 years younger than she is today and the highest she briefly made it was #6, and had a combined 1-11 record not vs Serena or Venus who were mostly AWOL then but vs the then big 4 of Henin, Clijsters, Sharapova, and Mauresmo. She couldnt even sustain that and soon fell out of the top 10 before retiring again. Yet some of you think in her 30s after barely playing serious tennis for another 5 years she would be #1 or #2. Fantasy land. Prime Hingis would probably do very well today, but that is about 13 years ago now.

pro tennis is less about playing one amazing match every 4 months and more about playing one match every single day for 11 months of the year at a consistent level. That’s why pros retire at 30-35, not because they can’t play well anymore. It’s why Petros can still compete with top tennis pros in the occasional exo but after a few weeks back on tour he’d be hospitalized or dead.

Hingis needs adjustement .How many top women have beaten a Williams sister, be it Serena or Venus as much as she did?

She tried to come back from injuries and drug use and couldn't do it. Hardly anyone can. But, that has nothing to do with her play before her injuries.

Does who hate Hingis, sorry to say, hate a 20 century woman...they probably fit in more with a Surf table as Sharapova or a gym monster as Williams...not to mention the rest of the top 10, just to be respectful to them.

That's what I remember too. Don't get me wrong - in her prime, great mind for the game and not just mindless bashing like most of the sorry product the WTA puts out today. Touch at the net - very good.

Her 2nd serve would get mauled by the Top 15 or so.

If she could not get anymore power I would say she is in the 5 to 10 in the world. She was a good mental player not to many ladies with that abiliity out there. I would think there would be a racquet that could help with the power and she could get in the top 5 easy.

She was 11-14 against Davenport and had a better overall record against the Williams sisters (17-17) than Davenport did (14-23). Not exactly a lot of trouble against power hitters. Second, Davenport hit harder than anyone in the WTA today.
