Wow! I first read bits of this thread and your blog a wee while ago before joining the forum.
I thought it was all over for you tennis wise, how have you fared? Did the rest and rehab (+/- surgery) get you fit to play again or are you just playing casually.

Thanks maggmaster, nice of you to say so.
forthegame - just started playing casually, but I must admit I have thought about taking it a bit more seriously. It's really nice to be able to serve without the agony! Unfortunately I've had ME for the past year or so, meaning I've not been able to do a lot of anything. |

Do you still have the RAB? I slapped a Wise electronic tension head on mine, though mainly because I'm a tart than because I needed it.
If you're still playing with multis because of the arm, my favourite that has come out in the past few years is Mantis Comfort Synthetic. I'm a big fan of their balls too, and they're based in the UK so it's pretty easy to get hold of their stuff.

Good Luck! You're living what I would like to be doing. I was a pro jock many years ago (not tennis) and started playing tennis 5 yrs. ago I would love to give it much more time than I do get in shape and see where I can take it but life is not being that nice to me on this one.

Dags - yes, still got it. I'll try some of that string, although still got a couple of reels of Gosen to get through that I use with a signum pro co-poly.
Cheers setmatch. |

I had a pal who was diagnosed with ME, 7or 8 years ago, its ****, and for about two and a half years he couldnt do anything much. They also called it chronic fatigue syndrome and said it might have come from glandular fever. They caught everything else going and was even sent to have CBT. They also were suseptible to every disease/cold/infection going. This went on and on and despite several false starts they didnt really recover although they managed it better as time went on. Anyway because they got tonsillitis all the time they went to the docs/specialists who said it was a consequence of a weakened immune system from ME and not to worry, perfectly understandable, happens all the time apparently. Anyway a couple more bouts and they were fed up and went back to the docs and asked they to remove the tonsils. Doc refused, said didnt do it in adults now, but his tonsils were sort of pitted and undulating permanently so he pestered the doc who after a lot of hassle sent him back to a different specialist who agreed to whip em out. Anyway after two or three weeks of agony from the operation (apparently a tonsilectomy much more painful when your an adult), the pain went from the op. The weird thing though was that not only were the tonsils gone, but he realised that he was practically 100% better from the ME. Instantly It turned out that the knackered tonsils had been the cause of the illness NOT the other way round. They were without him knowing it slowly poisoning him from the inside, no wonder he felt permanently ill and tired, and this despite countless checks for everything under the sun for a cause and batteries of tests of a couple of years where they couldnt find anything that was causing the fatigue and other symptoms . Anyway it may have no relevance, but I just wanted to pass it on as he was literally like a new person overnight after a few years of zombiefication as soon as he had had the tonsils out, so if youve already had yours out apologies for duff info, but if not and you have had bouts of tonsillitis or yours are in any way swollen, mis-shapen, or pitted, could be worth a think about. I have no scientific evidence to back this up though mate, but the rapidity of the recovery from years of illness was unbelievable and he has been fine for about 5 years since. Just a thought Last edited by nickynu : 08-31-2012 at 02:02 PM. |

Hi Nickynu
Nice to hear from you - hope you're well. Are you playing much? I'll investigate the tonsils avenue as nothing else seems to have shown up on any tests. I'm a bit fed up of begging doctors to test for things though! I played a couple of sets of singles the other day and was completely wiped out the following day. |

I believe (on circumstantial evidence only) that many chronic symptoms of fatigue are due to infections that the body has essentially quit fighting (thus things like white blood cell counts don't show it). I was exhausted for a couple of years, barely functioning after a couple of hospitalizations for near-death experiences. I had chronic sinus and ear infections that didn't respond to antibiotics anymore, recurring shingles, and barely managed to function, sleeping 14 hrs per day. My doctor put me on long term sulfa antibiotics and the anti-shingles med, but that only helped a little. Then I researched everything I could about anti-staph natural cures. I can't say exactly what was most effective, because I did them all at once, but here is what I tried.
Supplements for energy: Magnesium, vitamin D, Zinc, Pantothenic Acid, kelp (Iodine), and you need to balance with enough copper. Supplements with anti-bacterial and some anti-viral properties: echinacia and goldenseal (take in 2 wk bouts), grapefruit seed (not grape), NAC, colostrum, lots of garlic, of course lots of vitamin C (grams at a time), some vitamin E, a good multivitamin, and a pretty fair amount of fish oil (reduces inflammation throughout the body) AND Lysine as an anti-viral. Other antibacterial things to do: Couple cups of Peppermint tea a day WITH apple cider vinegar, oil of oregano (a few drops in the tea, and inhaled - just a drop on a paper towel - sounds like food, but feels more like paint thinner). For draining the sinuses, oil pulling. This seems strange but it is basically putting oil - like safflower oil - in your mouth and holding it there for 10 minutes. Uncomfortable, but really works (supposedly from India). Also, Sudafed as a decongestant, also. Of course, you want to crowd out the bad bacteria with good bacteria. I use SinusEase, which comes in a bottle at Vitamin Cottage in the refrigerator. It has rhino bacteria as well as the acidopholus, etc. for the stomach. Drink about a third of a bottle each day and get some up toward your nose. Also - and this really hurts and my doctor questions about how harsh it is - get one of those sinus rinse bottles you are supposed to put a bit of salt solution into. Put in some garlic-infused oil, some hydrogen peroxide, some Listerine (the thymol and eucalyptol are potent anti-bacterials as well as the alchohol) - about 1/3 inch of each except less of the peroxide - a bunch of salt, and fill the bottle the rest of the way with water. Rinse your sinuses out with that. You will definitely feel it. Tailor it to what you think helps you and how much you can stand. (If you really want to feel your head explode, just snort a bunch of Listerine straight). I felt better pretty qucikly, within a week or two, doing these things. Since then it has been a steady climb upward toward being normal. Since I've gotten on top of the infections, I've slacked off on the most unpleasant things (oil of Oregano, sinus rinsing) though I make sure I do them at any sign of sickness or weakness. Now, when I play tennis for two hours or so, I'm more tired than before I got sick, but I'm not trashed for a week lying in bed. All of this is just what one guy did to get better, doesn't mean it is applicable to others, but it is definitely worth researching. Last edited by NLBwell : 09-06-2012 at 01:04 PM. |

NLBwell - I'm not sure what happened here. Very rude of me not to reply and thank you for your advice. Apologies.
I've been feeling slightly better and won a very low key tournament a few weeks ago. Got a UK grade 4 coming up this weekend for which I'm seeded 2 and the following week am playing an over 40 ITF grade 3 in Portugal (part holiday for Missus as well). I feel like I'm getting the bug again unfortunately! |

Glad to heat that about the arm...things were looking kind of dire last we heard. Well, tennis is taking a bit of a back seat at the moment, I'm in my last semester of nursing school. Seven more weeks of h*ll to get through, and then boards, and then job hunting. Got bumped to 4.0 after playing 6,485,992 matches last year (approximately). Had a great run, and now starting all over again, because evidently, I now suck (from the top of the 3.5 barrel to the bottom of the 4.0 barrel...according to some...I don't necessarily agree!). Funny, and here I thought I was improving! School has made tennis much more of an escape, and has kind of increased my appreciation that I get to play at all. So all is good. Since any trips to districts/sectionals most likely won't happen this summer, I'm looking to play a few more tournaments if my schedule allows. Any plans for a visit???

I'm fascinated by the stories of long-term fatigue-like (ME,etc) syndromes discussed here by tennis players. You can add me to the list. I too had an unexplained severe fatigue for all of the year 2009. Just like you guys say any exercise was followed by exhaustion the next day. I had lots of medical tests that provided no clear answers. I gradually got better over the year 2010. I'm still not sure why it happened or why it receded. I'm still occasionally bothered by it. I wish modern medical research would focus on this syndrome more than they have been.
Anyway, gl Moz. |

For those mystery diseases that modern medicine can't figure out like CF, Fibro, Lymes, etc, check out the work of Dr. John E. Sarno, MD.
