When I worked in SF and communed there every other week; I went to Golden Gate Park and there are tennis courts in the middle of the park. Back then there were plenty of pick up tennis. This is a good 15 years ago but I had several great players that were ranked college level players along with some girl players that where in their teens but I lost to all of them in a set. I did well against some of the college players; so the teens were high tournament level players and they were very good.

Not to beat a dead horse, which I must, but I mentioned ALL of the courts that other's have repeated.
If OP really wants to play 4.0 level tennis in SF, he'd/she'd need to get over to the courts, meet some players, and figure out the best hitting times.
I grew up mostly at GGPark. It's still pickup on about 1/4 of the courts, while the other's are preplanned action. You go there, you look like a capable tennis player, you be nice, you take your chances, just like any other courts.
I'm sure some of you's and me are testing the waters here. I'm a mobility challenged 4.0, usually play much better in doubles.

Bit off topic, but when did they get rid of the court at Helen Wills? And are the courts at Alice Marble still around? And GG Park charges to play?

Nothing wrong with GGP. Except resurfaced just last year and already cracking. They want to turn Court #5 into a clay court for instruction. Best public courts in SF, for a small price of $5 for 1.5 hrs. Take the N Judah from Civic Center to Arguello at UCSF. Walk to GGP (about 3 blocks).

There's usually a black guy riding a bike looking for pick-up matches. And a shaggy hair hippie looking to hit. He's really bad, so I suggest you say no. If you go there during USTA matches, there's usually a bigset Asian guy that's always shouting at the top of his lungs. We love GGP. It's awesome, because it has character.
