Default 4.0+ tennis in Columbus OH?

Ive been here for 2 years and it seems tennis does not exist in Columbus OH. I am from Houston and I played every single day. Here Im lucky if I get in once a week. People just dont play and find every excuse not to.

Are there any tennis players here? avid, consistent players? Or does anyone know a decent website where I could find them? I also notice that people will insist that they want to play a lot but I end up finding out "a lot" is once every 10 days.

Im desperate for help, lol.

Have you called any local clubs to see if they host "tennis parties" or "singles" nights? Tennis parties you rotate partners and play doubles against various opponents, and the singles night around here you play a set against three different players. Real good way to meet people to play with.

Google says there is a greater Columbus tennis association. Complete with adult leagues.

Being from the south, you might not be aware that because of the Ohio weather/winter, many regular players join a club. Through any decent sized well run club you should find they can put you in contact with a group at your rating or in a drill class. If you get contact with a group... there you go. For the drill class, if you see some players in the drill you think would be competitive, introduce yourself and take the conversation from there.

Another cheap option may not be available for you at this point, due to the weather getting cooler.... but try to find the best larger outdoor courts in your area that are in good shape. Drive by in the late spring or early summer at different times to see who is playing where. If there are a few guys out that look to be your range, again, introduce yourself.

Third option is internet. I'm not sure if this is useful in Columbus, but go to gamesnake dot com. It's a free site you sign up for a variety of sports, including tennis. (Really popular for ultimate frisbee, biking, and soccer.) Then you submit "a game" for tennis this Sat. 9am at such-and-such park looking for advanced player etc, etc. and the site emails all the other players in the database within 50 miles who signed up on gamesnake and who listed tennis/advanced as one of their 10 games they like to play.

Like someone once said, "There are no friends in the world, just strangers... until you introduce yourself." Good luck!

There is quite a bit of tennis in Columbus, but if you want to play in the winter, you have to join a club. There are various leagues and a bunch of 4.0 and 4.5 USTA teams.

Club I know a pro at is Wickertree on the north end. Pretty busy place with indoor and outdoor courts. Moons ago it was THE spot in Columbus to play. But, I haven't frequented that part of the country for a while.

As far as free play (outdoors) you can try the courts right around Ohio State's campus (16 courts a few steps south of the stadium & another 10 on west campus next to the woody hayes athletic center) where you'll find a younger crowd. Skill ranges vary but I've played against some strong 4.0's up there. There are no less than 6 tennis clubs that offer indoor tennis through most of the winter. they do charge an initiation fee (in upwards of $250 at most) they charge you again to use the courts or take classes. Not sure what part of town you're in but the New Albany Tennis Center does not charge an initiation fee so you can play indoors there and just pay for court time.
