A wonderful movie about the somewhat tragic life of one of the greatest female players of all time, and without an unlucky horse riding accident probably the greatest female player ever bar none. How many of you have seen that. I had not seen it until I found it on youtube, I had known it came out decades ago:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IdOct5IGA8M http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhM87...feature=relmfu http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rwdp...feature=relmfu http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwTev...feature=relmfu http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gYg5c...feature=relmfu http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9OTGh...feature=relmfu http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HiWls...feature=relmfu The last part is the most touching part. First when she tells her kids she is going to die soon of cancer and if her husband marries someone new to be nice to that person. Then when her estranged ex coach Elenaor Tenant who she had seen in many years pays her a surprise visit on the tennis court in one of her final days.

With all women tested for testosterone levels and PED, Maureen would win brought forward to now. Put today's women back in 1953 with wood racquets, and you could even skip the tests and she would win.

It is unbelievable that such a great champion remains so little known to newtards and even not newtards. She settled the pattern of style that the Everts,Austins,Seles,Williams and many others would popularize. She was a true revolutionnaire in the womenīs game, like Lenglen or Court in their time.

Here's a link to a piece on Maureen Connolly's 1953 Grand Slam:

This was the film where the then-40something Tony Trabert played a cameo of himself as the 20something Trabert. I think it was the scene where Teach Tennant tells him to leave the court, and he slinks away, "Awww, c'mon Teach!"
Somehow he wasn't as convincing without the 1950s buzzcut hairdo.

Margaret Osborne Dupont, Connolly predecessor and one of the most memorable champions ever, passed away yesterday.
She was almost centennial, and her record, with a complete dominance at the late 40īs (Wimbledon,Forest Hills,Roland garros) and an unmatched record at doubles, speaks volume for herself. One of the top 10 ever women players and one that marked so much the serve and volley style of the 50īs.If she and Connolly had stayed competitive enough along together, that may have been a rivalry as great as Lenglen vs Wills,Court vs King, Evert vs Navratilova or Graf vs Seles, and possibly an even better one.
