Memphis, Louisville and the SEC schools impress. The two kids from IU are good. One is playing well despite a gimp knee. Looks like some great singles matchups today.

TopDawg posted this news earlier off the Stanford tennis web site:
Nolan Paige knocked off top-seeded Kyle McMorrow of Washington 6-4, 7-6 (4), John Morrissey took down Gonzaga's Levin Guillermo 7-6 (5), 6-0 and Matt Kandath defeated Gonzaga's Olivier Jamin 6-3, 6-3. Of note, Stineman lost to #2 seed in 3 very tight sets. Great to see the freshman Nolan Paige knocked off the #1 seed! I think this year's positions are going to be something like: 1) Kandath 2) Morrissey 3)Paige 4)Stineman/Ho 5) Romanowicz/Lin 6) Lin/Strobel, .... Last edited by db379 : 10-21-2012 at 10:55 AM. |

No, I'm on daddy duty most weekends helping my wife with our 2 month old so it's just watching TV for me. I thought about coming down to Memphis to watch a little but just couldn't swing it.

What is the purpose of regionals, some draws are much weaker than others.

Winners advance to the Indoor Championships. It's basically a way to get a more meritorious field, as opposed to giving a free pass to anybody who did decent last year (like the All-Americans).

This is maybe my favorite tournament of the year. Every region gets a chance to duke it out and it always makes for an interesting national tournament. You get to see your own region showcased and then the nationals as well. It has its merits.

Based on this week, it seems like reports of OSU's demise have been greatly exaggerated. If Rola indeed comes back, they got:
1S: Rola (top 5 player) 2S: Kobelt (A little inconsistent because he relies on the serve so much, but still a top tier #2) 3S: McCarthy (Not sure why he isn't playing this weekend, but a very good #3) 4S: Van Engelen (Same as McCarthy with absence this week, but a solid player for sure) 5S: Christ (If this weekend is any indication, should be a very good #5. If he beats Hiltzik, I think it is safe to put him ahead of Bernstein as the best #5 in the *******) 6S: Smith (Probably the best #6 in the country outside of Virginia) And if McCarthy or Van Engelen are injured or out for whatever reason, they have solid #6s in Diaz or Callaghan. If Rola returns, that looks like a team in the 2-5 range (behind Virginia, but competitive with Duke, USC, and UCLA). Michigan should be a solid team in the 7-10 range. Illinois has depth and could conceivably be a top 16 team. The rest of the ******* is entirely devoid of great teams, unfortunately. Some solid teams (ND, Indiana, Minnesota) but nobody who can make it to Nats at Champaign. |

I live in Socal, it would be nice once in a while to see northwest and the southwest in a combined tournament.

Yeah, only 32 people. 8 quarterfinalists from All-American. Normally, 2 or 3 wild cards, I think. Throw in these twelve qualifiers, and you are only talking about 14 or so guys who get in based on rankings if they don't win Regionals (this is assuming a little overlap between high rankings and quarters at AA & winners of Regionals). There are a lot of great players who aren't in that group.

If any good teams have the guts to play them at home this year and you plan to make the trip let me know.

MU's Stefan beats teammate King and will face Illini's Kopinski in one semifinal. Hiltzik won his quarterfinal match as well. Kopinski/Gosea are in the men's doubles final I think.

McCarthy played behind Ille Van Engelen last year. I don't know that they will swap this year. Diaz had quite a run at the ITA All-American tourney. Connor Smith is very good, but Duke and Virginia will both contest the best #6 claim. Not sure what USC and UCLA will show at that position this year. A lot of questions remain to be answered at the National Team Indoors in February. Depth has usually been a strength at Ohio State, and this year will certainly be no exception. They might miss Chase Buchanan more than most people think. He was on a tear to end the year, and was their best doubles player IMHO. |
