For some, if it means their kid gets to play where ever they want to regardless of skill level, zero internationals is the right number for them. They don't care about the unintended consequences. To them they sheild their hidden agenda with the "it's my tax dollars and I have a right" blah, blah, blah argument.

We know the drill.

What are the 'unintended consequences' you have in mind?

Not enough participation at all levels, incomplete rosters, decreased competition levels, more dropped programs, same top schools always winning NCAA.

I wont dispute some of your points because I dont know. But I will question 'incomplete roster' and 'not enough particpation’. So just to keep this post on track for Clemson tennis, I will add that Clemson tennis was most consistently successful in the 80s and into the 90's. The team was largely composed of homegrown players. It appears that if Kreise had an international, that the player had some strong US ties, for example Desdunes. In the 70s, coach Beckwith started bringing in some middle easterns, Indians and Paks, Davis Cuppers nonetheless. They were still unable to handle UNC's McNair and Mckee, and Marylands Lucas. So 30 years later, the cycle continues. For Clemson, a long time since NCAA relevance or being the champ of the South Carolina for that matter. Only now I pay taxes that I didn't back then. And if I think that opportunities should go to Americans first, I have no problem saying so. And I dont have a 2 star that wants to play there.

That's fine. I like your references to Clemson tennis history. I'll leave it at that so as not to ruin the thread. This topic will come up elsewhere. Always does.

This post is all true. However what you have to consider is that in those days America was the world's definite #1 country for tennis. The top 50 of the ATP at that time was 50% Americans or more always. Now tennis is more global and you can get quality players from countries like Tunisia and Thailand. Also in those days college tennis was more of a direct line to the pro tour. I go into the Clemson locker room nearly everyday and there former players all over the wall. Many of them reached high levels in the ATP such as Mark Dickson(assistant at Miami) #12 in the world. Now even the most elite program will be lucky to get 2 top 150 players.

Clemson added Furman on January 16th at home to the schedule.

8th player will be arriving soon. Martin Blaho from Slovakia, a player I cannot find any information on whatsoever.

The Maden bros made the final of a German future event. This will be a great combo this year

Clemson 7, Furman 0

routine win today in the first game of the season. The team looked sharp which was nice to see as last year they came out cold and barely beat College of Charleston 4-3.

Doubles:

The Maden bros won 8-1. This will be a very goos team this year. Not much to report in doubles in was an easy point for the Tigers.

Singles: (all winners Clemson)

1. #75 Yannick Maden def Andrew Mellow 6-3 6-2
Mellow is a scrappy player and came out sharp. Maden made a lot of errors at first, trying to be aggressive. Maden has added a couple of shots to his arsenal. A more aggressive dissecting forehand is one of those shots, very dangerous. As the match went on, Maden was just far too much for Mellow. Mellow did not have the game to compete.

2. Hunter Harrington def Alex Christ 6-2 2-6 6-1
Harrington moves all the way up to #2. He played #5 most of last season. He has a game based on creating winners. High risk play. He played well but had a 2nd set blip where he started to miss more, but was able to dial it in in the 3rd and never allowed Christ to truly be in the match.

3. Gerardo Meza def Joel Cook 6-3 6-4
Meza was a staple at #2 last year but moves down to #3 for this match. Cook is 6'10 and makes some of the most absurd errors you will ever see, hitting balls way over the fence and such. Of course being so tall he can crank a serve every now and then. That's basically the only reason he is a competitive tennis player. Meza was too strong from the back of the court.

4. Dom Maden def Matt Browne 6-2 6-2
This match was on the far court so didnt get to see much. Easy win for Dom, who looked very keen on his footwork. His return of serve was working which is very important for his game as he can really slap the #### out of the ball on returns on the forehand side.

5. Ayrton Wiboww def Jacob Behal 6-7(6) 7-6(4) 10-7
A worrying result. Yes he won but he should not have struggles in this type of battle. Behal is a good player, probably should be #2 for Furman really. But Wibowo allowed him into the match on several occasions. He led the 1st set tiebreak 6-3 then proceeded to lose 5 straight points to gift the set to Behal. Shades of last year vs NC State, except that was when the match was 3-3 and we lost to NC State because of it! Wibowo is not clutch, mainly because of his high risk game. I feel like he stayed back far too much in this match. He is best when moving forward to net.

6. Austin Ansari def Luke Synn 6-2 6-3
Collegiate debut for Ansari. He looked good, his forehand was really working well. Encouraging result for Ansari in his first dual match. Could be a solid #6 this season.

Double-header yesterday

Clemson 6, Winthrop 1
Singles
1: #75 Yannick Maden (CU) d. Dylan Comerford (W) 6-3 6-3
2: Hunter Harrington (CU) d. Peter Nagovnak (W) 6-4 6-2
3: Dominique Maden (CU) d. Yuta Hirokawa (W) 6-2 6-0
4: Zachary Rigsby (CU) d. Cody Decandia (W) 6-2 6-0
5: Austin Ansari (CU) d. Michael Chan (W) 7-6(2) 6-4
6: Juan Pablo Boada (W) d. Martin Blaho (CU) 6-4 6-4

Doubles:
1: #18Yannick Maden/Dominique Maden (CU) d.Dylan Comerford/Cory Decandia (W) 8-0
2: Hunter Harrington/Zachary Rigsby (CU) vs Peter Nagovnak/ Yuka Hirokawa (W) Unf.
3: Ayrton Wibowo/Austin Ansari (CU) d. Steven Patrick/Juan Pablo Boada (W) 8-4

Clemson 7, Davidson 0
Singles
1. #75 Yannick Maden (CU) def. Joe Schafer (D) 6-2, 6-1
2. Hunter Harrington (CU) def. Nicky Kunz (D) 6-3, 7-5
3. Dominique Maden (CU) def. Chris Mark (D) 6-3, 6-1
4. Zachary Rigsby (CU) def. Robert Lightbourn (D) 6-3, 7-6
5. Ayrton Wibowo (CU) def. Connor Evins (D) 6-2, 6-4
6. Austin Ansari (CU) def. Alex Howard (D) 6-3, 6-2

Doubles
1. #18 Dominique Maden/Yannick Maden (CU) def. Kevin Moore/Chris Mark (D) 8-4
2. Ayrton Wibowo/Dominique Maden (CU) def. Joe Schafer/Ethan Kallick (D) 8-1
3. Gerardo Meza/Zachary Rigsby (CU) def. Connor Evins/Nicky Kunz (D) 8-4

Dom Maden is looking very sharp early in the season. Chris Mark is a good ball-striker and the two were having some battling rallies early but Maden is the more athletic player and has more shots to his arsenal.

Gerardo Meza sat out of singles in the double-header to get ready for next weekend.

Yannick Maden had a classic dismantling of a net-rusher in Scahfer. Great matchup for Maden as his passing shots are superb.

The Maden doubles teamis looking unbeatable at the moment. They will be top 10 at the end of the season.

Austin Ansari looked good for most of the day. He let Chin of Winthrop into the match and Chin started to believe and played well to make it close. Ansari is the one of the 3 very athletic players on Clemson's team along with Dom Maden and Zac Rigsby.

Disappointing to see Blaho lose in his debut. He dosen't really have any racket-head speed and Boada was a better ball striker than him.

watched the recruiting video of Karen Khachatryan. Looks like a pretty good player. Has a live arm on the forehand that can hit several angles. Athletic player, although his footwork isn't polished. Better than Blaho for sure.

This class does not excite me much. The players look average like lower line-up type players not really good enough to challenge the top or move us up in the ACC. There is no info on the Bulgarian player, can't find any results.
Kennedy looks like the best of these players.
This aint gonna get it done.

They get 4 good Americans two of whom are in state and a solid international. Then they get scoffed for it. Look at VA hoarding all the top talent and they still haven't got it done. There's only 25 Blue Chips each year. I'd say Clemsons class is pretty darn good. There's upside here. Give em a chance.

Your right at least hes getting Americans. I have played with Strawn dozens of times and he has a huge upside. Hes about 6ft6 lefty and gonna be a late bloomer because he didnt start tennis until he was 13. Kennedy is HUGE!! He is a really good doubles player and has alot of upside. I have seen both of these players numerous times.

I agree. At least he is trying to go American. For a team ranked outside the top 50, I would say that is a great recruiting class. There are dozens of teams ranked above them that didn't do as good of a job recruiting.

I have also heard that Kennedy has a lot of upside and potential. It's good to hear that about Strawn as well. This crop of players likely wont replace what we lose(Yannick Maden, Zac Rigsby, Ayrton Wibowo) this season immediately.

very early 2014 line-up prognostication:

1. Gerardo Meza
2. Hunter Harrington
3. Dom Maden
4. Austin Ansari
5. Zach Kennedy
6. Brent Lett/Karen Khachatryan/Daniel Strawn
7. Christian Harris
8. Martin Blaho

Clemson denied the invitation to play in the ITA kick-off weekend. Opting instead to head to New Hampshire to play a a pair of Ivy League teams. Dartmouth will be hosting a tournament with Clemson,Brown,Purdue and themselves.

We are playing Dartmouth 4:30 tomorrow and Brown 12:30 saturday, not playing Purdue. This is a good chance to get wins over teams ranked above us (we are 61). Dartmouth is 49 and Brown is 51. If we can win both (which I am expecting) it will boost our ranking a good bit.

At first I was disappointed that we were not playing in the ITA kickoff but this is actually better. It's a better situation than Miami who will get a not so great win ovr ULL and then get smashed by Ohio State. Same thing with GT.

Well it was a struggle to get updates but it is confirmed that Clemson beat #49 Dartmouth 4-0.

I am not sure who the winners were yet. I'm pretty sure Yannick Maden won because the Dartmouth feed said Centenari lost and he usually plays 1.
