If you think REM and RHCP are the worst bands ever, echoing previous posts, I'd love to know who your top bands are too then.

BTW FWIW FYI... John Frusciante > legend.

Man... RHCP and REM are like Mozart compared to the Black Eye Peas and Lady Gaga.

I used to listen to both bands when on their prime
now all their songs sound the same

BUT: live RHCP is something to see before dying really...
And REM during the mid nineties had that weird rock sound I like very much

both bands play real music when compared to the crap we have to bear at the moment (adele, lana del shiBe, black eye bullphit, etc)

Boys, don't get your panties in a wad. I'm not considering these Nickelback and Dimehead or whoever flash-in-the-pan bands you kids listen to. Don't even know them. When I say "worst band ever" I clearly mean long-running, mystifyingly critically acclaimed acts.

And for the record, the correct answer here is "Chili Peppers". While both bands are horrible, just horrible, Chili Peppers are slightly more horrible. R.E.M. managed to fumble out one excellent song in their decades-long reign of terror ("Man on the moon") and maybe one other listenable tune, while the Chili Peppers are just 100% unremittingly unbearable.

Gotta listen to the early to mid 80's REM, Heycal. Tunes like "Radio Free Europe", "(Don't go back to) Rockville", "Fall on Me", "Finest Worksong", "I Believe", "It's the End of the World as we Know It", "The One I Love", "Orange Crush"...alternative/College rock at its finest. I agree that their popular stuff during the 90's isn't the best, IMHO.

RHCP live are fantastic. Last time I saw them was Coachella '07 and they still had it. You don't even like "Soul to Squeeze" or "Under the Bridge"? Great songs, even for someone who hates the Peppers. 'Californication' is a great album but 'Mother's Milk' in '89 introduced me to the band and is a sentimental fave.

They're just a Beatles parody band.

The Beatles are, and will forever be, the greatest, most influential, groundbreaking, and long lasting band ever. Period. Their music seems to be inherent in nature, and they have influenced EVERY band that came after them and EVERY band that will ever come.

all you need is love

Sometimes parodies trump the originals.

This is one of those urban myths it seems, old opinions that get latched on to. I often see the phrase bandied around.

They're anything but a Beatles parody band.

I disagree with this so much...

The Beatles were a very good band, but the fact that they have so many people calling them the "best band ever" is just ridiculous to me. Most groundbreaking? Inherent in nature? What?

They're influential and long lasting, but as Kevin said, often times parodies can be better than the original.

This boring statement is why I'm tired of the Beatles. In Britain we seem to have got ourselves into a state where it's almost an obligation to ask him to perform that dirge Hey Jude at the end of stuff. Had our Olympic opening ceremony not been awesome, I would have been more annoyed than I was to see them follow up that cool montage with the fireworks with old **** face.

Lennon Saves.

Keep listening to the Beatles and one day you'll understand.
