Default Who is the greatest bust of all time

In football you have Ryan Leaf and Jamarcus Russell as two of the greatest busts of all time in NFL history. Who would you vote for in tennis as the biggest bust of all time. Someone who was predicted to win many grand slams but flamed out in the pros. Anna Kournikova comes to my mind as she was a highly touted junior who did not win a single tournament, although was ranked as high as #8 in the world.

I think Anna K. had a pretty solid career all things considered. I might go back to someone like Billy Martin who was heralded as a can't miss prospect but didn't pan out. Of course, if Donald Young doesn't turn it around people will pick him. On the women's side maybe someone like Monique Viele (sp?). If you want to go international, Carlos Boulda comes to mind.

Al Parker is another one who domintaed the Juniors but failed to make an impact in the pros. Scott Davis and Kathy Rinaldi were tennis prodigies but did not come close to winning a grand slam, although they both attained high singles rankings at the peak of their careers.

Magdalena Maleeva was not a bust. She was a solid top 10/top 15 player for a few years which was the max of her potential. She was merely a power baseliner/ball basher, and there were alot better than her, and her mental strength, mobility, and consistency were all horrible. She followed well in the footsteps of her sisters, but Manuela was more talented than the other two, hence why she lasted by far the longest in the top 10.

Her #4 ranking was a rankings aberration, nothing more, she never did anything to deserve that.

That's kind of unfair to call Al Parker a bust. He had arguably the greatest junior career ever and had the highest of expectations, but his career was cut short by a severe back injury. He was told he'd never play again, but fought through injuries for a few years until his body just couldn't take anymore. Don't feel sorry for him though because he went on to a career in investment banking and has probably made a lot more money than most people do on the pro tour.

Billy Martin was definitely touted as being the next great American but went bust quickly. But then I might have a bias here as I came up about the same time and same area as he, so I was well aware of the hoopla. When nothing was on the line, he was an incredible talent.
