You're missing the point. These retirements are coming with no more than 8 points needing to be played. If an opponent retires after getting bageled in the first, obviously the winner feels great having been able to preserve strength.

But when you only need to win 5-6 points and your opponent decides he's had enough, it is weak.

Alternately if a player doesn't say they are injured, but just admit they are beaten by a better man, I don't see that as bad sportsmanship, but many people don't agree with that. As I said before, there is no right and wrong, just difference of opinion as to what constitutes bad sportsmanship.
But you cannot just admit you're beaten and stop the match in tennis. What was being said here was that his record of retirements with many being just minutes from defeat, citing some illness, show he was lying. And people were defending him saying that was just fine.

Interesting thread

Here's my take,
As a tennis player. A win is a win.
Sure, I like to knockout the opponent but I get the same satisfaction knowing that I've beaten him up to submission by him retiring and saying " no masse"
There's no referee to stop the match like in boxing, so the losing player who has nothin left either tanks or quits.
He's going get boo either way.

As a fan, yea I like to see a good fight till the end.
I'll boo Tipsarevic if he was tanking anyway so what's the diff?
Tips doesnt have the mental fortitude to be a top5 player anyway with that attitude.

The greats will not quit , even when nauseated and dizzy.
here's an example.

When you retire in this fashion, it basically fools your mind into thinking it wasn't an official loss. That there was a side factor in losing. I don't think he has come to terms of accepting losses. And someone who can't do that probably isn't GS champion material.

And he started the New Year with a bang again. Retired in Kooyong while being down 1:6 0:1. Sure, it is only an exhibition event - but who says one should be quitting in official ATP tournaments only......

Maybe 2013 will be the year he achieves the Quit Slam.

Another retirement from Tipsy!!! When he was 6-2 5-1 down with Almagro (alias.. impossible to win... match already lost).

This guy is a genius!

Tipsy is going to be the man behind the new ruling where players are fined their entire winnings for quitting without justification. The courtside doctor and referee will decide if a player is justified to quit. Unless your leg is falling off or you broke something in your body, there is absolutely no reason to quit. This is tennis, not boxing!!! You're not going to die by just finishing a match while getting your butt whipped. He should be banned for a year for consistently pulling this or at least be disallowed from entering the next 6 tournaments.

The fans need to pelt this guy with debris when he's exiting. That will get the message across.

Wow, he did it again? I'll second this suggestion. It's close to the worst sportsmanship you can get. It's the prerogative of the person with the advantage to deliver the coup de grace and it's sure as hell your job to stay and take your licks. The crowd paid for that show and it's not up to Tipsy to cry 'uncle' because he's too childish to take his beating.

Wow, I used to have some respect for this guy, he's smart. Well read apparently and gives good interviews. But this is pathetic. He can easily tank a few games and finish the match with no risk at all. Bloody wanker should be fined for this. I wonder what the other players think of him.

He just tied the open era record for most retirements at slams:

7 Wayne Ferreira
7 Janko Tipsarevic
6 Jerome Golmard
5 Gene Mayer
5 Andrei Pavel
5 Michael Llodra

Vegas now has Tipsy @ 2-5 to break all-time mark before he retires for good ...

well, to be fair, he retired at 2:6 1:5, which is way too early for him. Normally he quits a game or two before the end of the match. I think he just forgot that you play till you win three sets at AO.....

(didn't realize ferreira had this record... along with the record for the most consecutive slam appearances)

for tipsarevic, did any inactivity period follow any of these injuries ?...

EDIT:
hey, he just completed the retirement slam !!!
1 AO
1 FO
2 W
3 USO

and for those who worship the olympics and it's even an "olympic ret. slam" !
(retirement at beijing 2008 )

wtf, what is with him?
You can call it the "Yellow Slam" for cowardice. He may be the first to get one. He's young enough to go for two of them now.
