I like Mohammed Lahyani as well, but his approach is different. Graff is firm but fair, while Lahyani tries to be all pally and openly has a sense of humour. An argument Lahyani had with Coria at 2003 Hamburg during Coria's semi final match with Gaudio, still cracks me up.

Is he retiring because he beat his wife with a tea cup?

Layani is indeed goofy. However, his career included some quite remarkable matches, like Federer-Sampras or Isner-Mahut.

I don't have a link, but I can describe:

Guillermo Coria won the first set 6-3, and the second set went to a tiebreak. Gaston Gaudio held his own serve on the first point of the tiebreak.

On the second point of this tiebreak, Coria and Gaudio had a short rally, when the umpire (Lahyani) suddenly stopped play to look at a mark that Gaudio hit onto the baseline. Gaudio then starts going to the net and shouting at Lahyani for stopping play when he thought his ball was in, and Lahyani shouts to Gaudio "It's your point, it's your point, he (pointing at Coria) said stop, he said stop. It's your point, take it easy". Gaudio looks surprised and shrugs his shoulders.

Coria is then aghast at Lahyani telling him that he said stop, going "No, no". Lahyani then shouts to Coria "You lose the point because you said out. Come, come (urging Coria towards the chair) I'll explain to you. You say out and then I say stop". Coria then goes "no, I never said out. You stopped play".

On the replay, it was clear that Coria never said a word when Lahyani stopped play, but Coria lost the point anyway and ended up losing the tiebreak. However, Coria made up for this by thrashing Gaudio, 6-0, in the third set.

Coria then went on to win the final against Agustin Calleri.

Thanks Mustard.....too bad I wasn't such a tennistard back then. Thanks to you and many others who have interesting tidbits to contribute. Hopefully someone puts it on Youtube one day.

Pretty bad call from Layhani...maybe an excuse since he was not sure if the ball touched the line. Tried to please the angry Gaudio.

Lars Graff always struck me as a bada** mo'fo who would make a great James Bond villain, especially in a modern day Bond film starring opposite Daniel Craig. I reckon Graff could've starred as a fantastic La Chiffre.

Don't forget this disaster. After all that, Lahyani was wrong.

Graf has been a very good umpire, but I use the past tense deliberately. Recently I have noticed that he has been making some very bad overrules, maybe his eyes are going and he has decided, "enough". Particularly in this WTF tournament he has made some bad overrules.

I only wish some of the other umpires who have also been making incorrect and unnecessary overrules would retire as well! They are only supposed to interfere if the mistake is very clear.

the correction the ball was good call is not as bad as calling a ball out during a rally.

If he had waited a few more months, he could have retired along with Federer and Nadal.

Graff interview on career following final Stockholm Open this year.

http://youtu.be/ekMguGQCzqg

"It's better to leave the party while you think it is fun still, rather than be asked to leave."

I for one will miss Graff as an umpire. He was a good umpire and had a discernible personality, without needing to impose on matches.

Graf always struck me as old school like Norm Chryst, there to do his job and not kiss up to the players or be seen on TV. I always enjoyed his verbal skirmishes with Roddick.
