My best guess is that he knew I was going to hit it at him the first chance I got. When he saw the short ball he knew where I was going and ducked.

Where was the server when he hit the swinging volley? I'm on edge because you have a foot in the alley so his "passing" shot is a horrible percentage shot. There must have been a gaping hole elsewhere in the middle or cross court?
