Default 2HBH scissor kick

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OXTaD...layer_embedded

Are there other names or instructions which van be found on Internet on this technique? Like bicycle kick or jumping 2HBH?
(I have only read old discussions http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/archi...p/t-99541.html)

Does anybody uses this technique? And when? An why is this shot only executed by a few players, what alternatives do others prefer/use for handling those shots?

I found myself that sometimes I do it naturally with high bouncing short balls on the backhand-side. I don't have a lot of swing, but the kickback gives me some power to put behind the ball.

I see Murray, Verdasco and Dolgopolov executing this shot often, even at the baseline. But I haven't found any usefull info besides what is described above, because I don't know how it's been called.

The purpose of this shot is on high balls, to raise your core and make contact with the ball higher. I will hit the shot when messing around, but when playing a match, I find it better to either move in or take a step back and hit a regular backhand.

Mule-kick BH is the most common term applied to this. Also referred to as a jumping BH. Scissor kick is a maneuver that is a bit different (used for moving back and upward for an overhead smash). I've used the the mule-kick for 1-handed BHs and for high sliced Fhs as well as for the 2HBh.

flat drive. you need a very good balance on one leg. stand sideway on the front foot only and kick the back leg backward as you drive the ball relatively flat. kicking back leg counter balances the extension of the arms forward.

or you might be thinking prep in open stance and quick switching to closed stance in the air as you make the contact. which kinda looks like a scissor kick.

About 90 seconds in, Will Hamilton demonstrates a true scissor kick. It is the scissoring action of both legs that gives it its name. The mule kick is a different animal.

Ridiculous to learn any one technique.
Just get your torso high enough to hit the ball the way you want, the rest takes care of itself, so you don't fall on your face.

For your enjoyment, here is a brief clip one of the most beautiful and deadly shots in the history of tennis by my personal favorite, Marcelo Rios:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FpqkryJaNio

Do it that way on the tennis court one time and feel good the rest of the day.

Thnx, I have found threads with the mule-kick... It's only a less sexy name than it looks like. I mean... I'm interested not because it's a missing stroke in my game, but it looks so damn cool on the court

Thanx for sharing al tips on how to perform this stroke.

Ocassions to when to use are:
* high balls (on the rise?), to have higher contact with the ball
(e.g. returning a kick-serve)
* hitting angles
* other?

What disadvantages are there? @BHic: why not use in matches like the pro's?

Disadvantages? Good luck generating pace or topspin.

At times I've timed this shot well and only really managed a lot of pace while also moving forward while doing the scissor. Just trying to jump up without forward momentum won't get you much in the way of pace

^ I agree. A jumping BH (or FH) can be hit with spin or pace if timed well and executed properly. Chang, Rios, Safin, Verdasco, Nadal and others have done so quite often.

I actually adopted a variation for my 1-hander because I had a lot of heel pain (right foot) and tennis elbow (left arm). For a while, I was suffering from painful heel spurs on my right leg. I did not realize it at first, but the heel pain resulted in TE on the opposite arm. After 2-3 weeks of TE, I realized the connection. I was not loading up and driving off my right foot to hit my lefty BH. As a result, I had compensated in such a manner as to out added stress to my elbow.

At the time, I recall marveling at Safin's implementation of the mule-kick BH (2-handed). I noticed that the loading and drive was done with the front leg and not the back leg and decided that I could use it for my one-handed BH. I implemented it by leaning forward a bit to put more weight on my bent forward leg. I found that I drive off that front leg with no pain to my back foot. For higher shots, I would employ a modified mule-kick. After 3-4 weeks of this my TE disappeared and my heel pain had also started to diminish considerably. Here is a sample of the Safin jumping BH that you can play with:

http://www.hi-techtennis.com/video_s...8&video_id=184

To study the mule-kick BH, pause the Safin video and then step thru the sequence frame-by-frame using the Left and Right arrow keys on your keyboard. For a jumping FH, you might try searching for "Air Kei" (Nishikori). For a implementation of of a 1-handed mule-kick BH, take a gander at this:

^ A PoT reference, no doubt. The mule-kick BH is also know as an Air BH. Here are couple of great ones from the more athletic women-folk:
