How much longer does Fed have?

I know this is a longshot but I really hope he is still playing in 2014. I may just have an opportunity to go to Wimbledon that year, and to be able to see Fed there would really be something else.

So really hoping he still plays till then!

A lot in that sense depends on the draw as well. I mean, last couple of years he could have lost to Simon at the AO11, Benneteau at Wimbledon12 (surely!), and even if Goffin goes 2-0 up at RG, who knows.

I think he can lose to anyone, but if I had to bet without knowing the draw, I'd still pick Fed to make all 4 QF. But sure, on a bad day there are guys ranked 12-16 and below he can lose to. Gasquet on clay, Haas on clay or grass, Karlovic or Isner on any surface in which they take away his racquet and sneak a couple of tiebreaks.

I think he'll definitely play every Slam till Wimbledon 2014. I wouldn't be too surprised if he retires anytime after that, but I would be if he retires any sooner.

The guy just finished the year as no.2 after a spell at no.1 again.
He had a massive season and won Wimbledon.
Decline.. Nope. He is steady as a rock.

I think he can do well for quite some time if he wants to, its more up to him than the rest of us.

IF Federer wanted to put in the long conditioning and training hours I think he could stay in the top 10 and have a 20-25% chance of winning any major he entered for the next 8-12 majors.


The problem is this... what motivation would he have to do that?
He's rich, has a family, and has most of the attainable records already. There's a few piddly things here and there.... but I can't even imagine where he'd draw the inspiration and motivation from.

What I'd like to see from Federer:

play less tournaments, pick and choose your spots to "put your body on the line"

I'd be perfectly fine if he won ZERO masters next year... and I'd be perfectly fine with him tanking the French Open if Nadal enters the tournament in relatively good form.

I'd like to see him go to the wall for the AO, WM, and USO and then start majorly cutting down on the fall swing, maybe only "seriously" playing EITHER Indian Wells or Miami but not both.. Playing the minimum # of clay tournies, and only Cincy... forget Toronto.

18th major, so extending his lead..imagine if wins wimby 10yrs after 1st,
most masters wins, fed has 21..lendl has 22 but likely nadal will pass him whatever,
most consecutive apps at world tour finals,
most appearances at world tour finals,
extending consecutive qf or better in majors record,
most consecutive majors played,
most majors played in,
extending his record of most match wins in majors,
gold medal in singles at rio 2016,

apart from the gold medal thing, the rest are acheivable.

As long as he is healthy. I suspect a (bad) back is going to make his decision for him around 2014.

He is quite greedy, so I think he will retire only in 2016. He will be a threat at the next 8 slams and will probably win one of them. Finishes with 18 slams and a couple more Masters, probably even one more WTF.

i agree with your second sentence in its entirety.

Why is it greedy for him to play at all for as long as he wants?

If he wants to play, he'll play, I'd be shocked if he went out there ONLY for dough. It would be difficult to spend the money the man has already made in one lifetime. No to mention his earning power won't be over the second he walks off the court...:
- he'll still get money sponsoring things for YEARS after his tennis career is over like MJ does with basketball.

- he could make more than all but the top 1% of people in the world just by doing 2-3 exos a year.

- Any TV broadcast would hire him yesterday to do match analysis

- Some tournament would love to have him as an investor/partner

or he could even open up some type of tennis clinic and just let the money roll in... or he could do ALL of the above

On the highest level - 3 years ( maybe 4, but that is a stretch). After that it is retirement from his active career.

I think Roger has until 2015 of good tennis. He gonna decline a little bit each year.....but still would be able to tussle with the other 3....while being randoming hurt by the other guys.
