Am just watching Ferrer putting on a tennis clinic against Berdych. Match not over yet, but so far Tomas is getting no mercy from David's relentless onslaught. Tomas has only managed to win two games. Question is, if Nadal comes back fit, can Ferrer in this fantastic form, beat his compatriot and confirm his status as Spain's no one?

Sure. As long as he doesn't misplace his syringes.

He's only beating bigmouthych. His form is no big deal. Nadal has won 11 in a row over bigmouthych (and only 3 of them were on clay). But anyway, Ferrer has beaten Nadal at the Australian Open and US Open already.

It will be the 3rd loss in 4 years to Ferrer in the Australian Open?

Rafa has only lost once to Ferrer at AO.

He'd have a great chance if Nadal busted his knee or tore his hamstring like the last times he beat Nadal at a slam.

I'm sure Nadal would find a new excuse if it happened again.

First of all, he has beaten Nadal, so it's possible.
Second, despite how awesome Ferrer looks, he still has trouble against Federer or Djokovic. The very best players have something that bothers Ferrer which is typically speed and power. Federer, for example, serves really well and earns a lot of free points. He also takes chances on his groundies and often makes it, but the free points is helpful. Nadal is as quick as Ferrer, but hits the ball harder, and being a lefty, he nullifies Ferrer's usual patterns which is attacking a righty's backhand. Djokovic is also similarly quick, and returns really well, so he can make it tough by being in many of Ferrer's serve. Ferrer's serve really helped in the Berdych match. Ferrer looks good against Berdych and del Potro because he can make them run. As fast as they are for men of their size, they still aren't as fast as a guy like Ferrer (or Djokovic or Murray or Nadal). Still, you have to say that Ferrer looked on fire against a tired Berdych. |

Ferrrer's the fifth player in the world for a reason. He's a spectacular player and has had a great career, but he's a quarterfinal man. There's a reason the top four are the top four. Yeah, he might pick off a semi here and there in the slams, but he's not and has never been in Nadal's league.

Completely depends on the surface. Indoors probably, hard courts toss-up, grass and clay no.

Ferret is 2-0 vs prime Nadal in hard court slams. So yes this Ferrer can can beat Nadal.

Hard courts is not a toss up. Ferrer has an outside shot at best on an outdoor hard court, unless Nadal returns in really poor shape. Indoors yes he would have a decent chance.

Does he have the game? Maybe.
Does he have the belief? Hell no. |
