I'm pretty sure he will play, but the other roger (roger brennwald, tournament director) is an idiot. he hasn't got the best image and I've heard he gave it away already with many sponsors and provokes trouble with the city etc.

Happy there is no Miami, it's not really his thing, I think...

Such a shame. Generally the outfits that Nike make for Fed wear in Miami are awesome.

Would've been nice to see Federer win Miami one more time, as it's been so long (2006). Still, probably for the best. The high bounces make it a real long shot. Rotterdam + Dubai = winning Miami.

I think it is a lot about money
One thing is sure, if he is not going to play in Basel, he will be excommunicated...

And if he is not going to play the Davis Cup?

I thought everyone knew about this, read about it the other day.

Fed gets paid $500k tax free for the event. He wants $2m. The Swiss people are ****ed at him.

The idea is that Basil is no tourney without Fed, so he can hold them hostage so to speak. The promoters said "We'll give it to him if we can get it, clearly we want him to play".

Fed denied it was about money saying he could just make it up in Asia, but it's a pretty clear picture. I'm all for guys making as much as they can, kind of dissappointing, even though it's none of my business, for him to do that.

You are confused, you forget built in Government inflation, something no one talked about in the recent elections.

One million dollars will be worth less than $100k in buying power in 100 years. 100 years ago 100 dollars had the buying power today of $3.46. So if you had $100.00, took a time machine to today, you couldn't buy a good hamburger or a gallon of gas.

People don't understand this, yet they vote!

Maybe it's about scheduling
I love the word probably in this haha.

If you had 300 million USD in the bank, you would be making 100,000 USD a week in interest alone easy, even if you were on a low interest rate and were being taxed at 50%, which you wouldn't be, other than by choice, if you had this amount of money.

Federer didn't actually say his scheduling decisions are determined by money, that's just coming from people on this forum who have no factual knowledge about Federer's motivation. It's called speculation.

I doubt very much that Federer is motivated by money at this stage, but on principle he will still expect to get paid his 'fair' share for his services. After all, he's not a mug.

His published schedule looks light enough that it's likely he's leaving gaps so he can add a few more if he's feeling up to it or on course with his fitness/form plans for the season.

Better to be a surprise addition than a disappointing withdrawal imo.

Also, at the World Tour Final he said that he was looking to practice more in 2013 than he had an opportunity to in 2012.

just seems odd for him to skip a masters as big as Miami.. when was the last time he didn't play it? I can understand Shanghai or Paris or one of the clay events, but Miami is a sign Fed is definitely feeling the pace now.

He's been playing it pretty much every year. I can understand him to a certain degree, and yes feeling the pace is part of it. But if you look at that period, he has a heavy run of tournaments with the AO, and three title defenses. Rotterdam and Dubai are ideal conditions for his current game, where he can dictate play well with his agressive style. I think he will be looking to employ as much an attacking game as he can next season, to try to cut mileage down.

IW, despite being a slow high bouncing court has suited his game well, he's won it more times than anyone else. So, returning there with that inbuilt good feeling, will give him an extra drive.

Miami is an event that he had struggled in the past few years, and he even stated that it seems slower than clay at times. The grinding does not reward his game, and I don't think he expects much out of his trip there. This way, he gets to celebrate Mirka's birthday away from the tour, and with the family during their small break. He can then prepare fresher for the clay.

I don't think it is a bad idea. Yeah, if he falls early in a lot of the events leading up to it, he may play it. But when he turned upt his year, his tank was almost empty.

While winning one major isn't a poor season, reaching just one finals certainly falls short of expectations. Federer has trimmed down his schedule in an apparent effort to maintain better overall health and conditioning.

The notable tournament missing in 2013 is the ATP 1000 of Miami.

Surprisingly, he's also excluded the ATP 500 in Basel. While not a high-profile tournament, it is contested in his hometown.

excommunication--church act,,he wont be excommunicated or banned from the church.

Federer is the reason people even watch Basel. It's only logical he should get the bigger share. I think Federer wouldn't be asking for so much if the topguy wasn't pocketing $10M or something, who isn't even the draw, really. It's like Hollywood. Tom Cruise got $100M for War of the Wolds.

Perhaps some people watch it for the tennis?

Did I suggest they would watch it for the Football? Stop nitpicking. I was saying Federer is the main draw.

Seven weeks off between tournaments, no Miami.
We are seeing less of the GOAT as time goes on. What a shame.
And the idiocy of putting Paris and the WTF back to back is highlighted once again.
