In the Rios book Safin said Rios had the talent to win 10 majors. (Marcelo Rios: The Man We Barely Knew)
Thomas Johansson said Rios could make you feel like a beginner. Bollettieri said Rios was his biggest disappointment. Rios was a great player but a bust in terms of winning majors. Just wasn't strong enough physically. The talent was there though.

I heard about Larry Gottfried, he was beating John McEnroe as a junior. From Florida. What ever happened to Larry, why did we never hear about him as a pro?

McEnroe. He really should have won a lot more grand slams. He could have been the greatest of all time, but is regarded as a Tier 3 great.

But as you say...he was good..very good. 7 majors may not look like a lot but against that field, its impressive. |

Always a "what if" but had McEnroe been born 10 years earlier and wrapped up his career before the more powerful racquets came to be, I suspect he would have won a lot more majors.

True. He did only 2 real great matches, against Vilas : he beated Vilas in Wimbledon (like many others players ...), and the most impressive is that he lost in FO against Vilas in 1978 in 5 sets (6/4 in the last set).

Frank Shields. Brooke Shields' father. What was the exact story with him, anyone know. I heard he was banned.

Camilla Bassett....reached number 4 in the world. 1983 Aussie QF,84 86 RG QF, and 84 US SF.
Unfortunate her dad death....made her ranking plummet down to the 200's. Suffered from Binge Eating as well. Possibly the closest to a slam Champion Canada had got barring the runaways like Greg Rudeski and Mary Pierce.

As much as I liked her I highly doubt Carling was ever winning a slam. She was not competitive with Martina or Chris at all even in old age, and they would remain playing Chris until 89 (when Carly would be 21) and Martina until 1994 (when Carly would be 26). She was also not at all competitive with Graf who emerged starting in late 85. Then there were a slew of youngsters coming up starting in 86 or 87 like Sabatini, Sanchez Vicario, Garrison, Sukova, Zvereva, who were all better than her, much better in the cases of Sabatini and Sanchez Vicario. She might have stayed in the top 10 a few years more, and reached another slam semi, but that is about it.

Saw Larry Gottfried play a couple times in college. I think he was only #4 on the team at Trinity at the time. (Bill Scanlon was #1, Tony Giammalva was in there, too)
