returning stuff bought with gift cards

I have to return part of my order placed using holiday gift cards..

will the refund be credited to my gift card or to my credit card?

for example:

I used a $100 gift card and bought two shirts $50 each. returning one of them. will I get $50 back on my credit card or on my gift card?

Every time I've done this, they credited the gift card.
