If Federer chose soccer over tennis at the age of 8 it's just as likely that he'd be a decent accountant at this age as it is that he'd be a serviceable professional soccer player, much less one of the best.

This. I swear a small minority of Fed fans think he's a deity and could fly if he wanted to.

The chances of Roger being a pro footballer are tiny - the chances of him being better than the best player in the world are so infinitessimally small that they might as well be zero.

As far as I'm aware, the only member of the top 4 who was anywhere near being a pro footballer was Murray, who was offered trials with Glasgow Rangers at age 14 - and it's almost certain that he wouldn't have made it as a pro footballer either.

Monfils looks kinda good at football, would make a good Winger.
Although Murray (and maybe Rafa) are the best footballers in the top 50. Unless there's someone who I don't know about.

Yep - because all you need to be a top footballer is a strong personality. Same for Basketball, neurosurgery, acting, writing or anything else.

.
Oh yeah? And what if when federer was 10, I told you that this guy will:

- be top 10.
- win 1 major.
- win 17 majors.

Can you tell me the odds on each one of those?

Federer/nadal/murray/djokovic all have very good builds for football. Ultimately we will never know but the amount of coordination/footwork needed for tennis would be handy in football.

I dont know if you watched the interview with peter schmeichel on the atp site but he said that nowadays the football coaches have realised that the best sport to do in conjunction with football is tennis and a lot of players even at the pro level are encouraged to play tennis. i know for a fact that ronaldo absolutely loves tennis.

INB4 yanks calls it soccer.. idiots.

So what can Fed not do then? Could he be an astronaut, a scientist? Seriously this entire topic makes me cringe.

Messi's balance and close control are out of this world so no Federer wouldn't be close. Messi is in the top 5 players of all time.

Zidane's better and more beautiful to watch.

Much lower than him having the aptitude for being a world class performer in tennis AND football - wouldn't you say?

I don't get what point you are trying to make in the bolded paragraph? That tennis is a good complementary sport for footballers to play? I suppose it could well be - but that has no bearing on the chances of Federer being a world class perfromer at football AND tennis.

Finally, the word soccer is an English invention, it came about to differentiate Association Football from Rugby Football - Rugger and Soccer.

What a ridiculous thread !

At first I thought it is a joke thread and I really can't believe that there are people who think that Roger can be a great soccer star as if it's just that easy. How can someone assume that just coz a guy is good in Tennis means he can play something else also.. Really silly

I never knew that Murray used to play Football. Murray playing football reminds me of Peter Crouch..

Of the topic, but I always used to like English Football. Always supported their national team. Gary Linekar, Paul Gascoigne, Alan Shearer, David Beckham, Steven Gerrard, Michael Owen, all my faves..

All great players; Gazza is my all time favourite - makes England's under achievements in major tournaments all the more inexplicable.

Let Messi and Ronaldo win titles for their national team first, titles as in not premier league ones, the BIG ones..
