Silverstring..an excellent poly that I have not used in a year.
The reason I love 4G is the insane control and the tension maintenance is awesome. How is the control with SS? Its been a long time since I have used it. Not a fan of SPPP. Has a weird, dullish feel that that I ended up not enjoying.

How about Weiss Cannon Black5Edge, or Silverstring or Signum Pro Poly Plasma combined with OG Sheep?

Silverstring 1.20 is easily in the top 5 control strings on the market.

^^^ I honestly don't know who you're talking about with regards to those statements. Tornado and B5E are in my top 5 best ever (along with Scorpion, Iontec and PH18 ) polys, and I don't like boardy string. Tornado is also tension specific. High tension yields a piece of cedar, low 50s to high 40s yields the most responsive poly I've used. B5E is far less so, and far more neutral. It does everything well, however. Silverstring, on the other hand, feels nothing like either albeit closer to B5E. It has an incredibly unique feeling, and is one of those like ALU and certain multis that has this innate "premium" feeling. I can't describe it. That sense of "this isn't on the market to make money, this was designed to be as good as it can be". Not many, no...MOST polys don't come close to that. Iontec is another with that feeling. This is all personal and subjective bantering however. As most of you know, however, Silverstring and B5E were my go-to poly of choice for quite some time.

GOOD! I personally hate the feel of b5e even though I know it is a good string. So I am glad that SS does not feel the same, and I dont remember that similarity either. I do remember that I was very impressed with it in a full job in a Wilson 6.1 16x18.
SS will go on my short list. I really wish I did not love 4G so much (just due to the $$$), but it is such an amazing string, especially when you just crush a ball - it gives that really crispy feel that ALU provides. I also noticed a surprise - Cyberflash mains did not give me the same spin as 4G. I was not expecting that. 4G almost seems like it gives off less spin than it actually does.

LOL...That is thing though - 4G is real easy on my arm. even though my setup is boardy, it is still really comfortable.

In terms of B5E, I liked it full bed in the RDIS 100 Mp but could not stand it in a APD GT. Also, how does Scorpion compare to Silverstring? Two strings to try out definitely. Last edited by Boricua : 12-06-2012 at 11:07 AM. |

Are they made of the same material? No idea. All I do know is that one is silver, and one is black. As we know, dozens of strings made of the same material feel nothing alike. B5E has a unique "plush" feel to it that is unique to it. Silverstring just feels like what it is: a flagship product.
Scorpion is a tricky old boy in that it is more powerful, offers better spin and is more responsive. It's not very expensive, but I seriously can't explain what it feels like to anyone. I honestly think that's just because it's the string for me. That one that responds just how I want it to. |

OTOH like you I really enjoy the precision of stiffer stringbeds which probably explains why I enjoy small heads and/or dense patterns and poly crosses such as 4G. I just hit with two of my PSGTs, one with VS/PHT and one with VS. with the PHT dead and at max tension loss I had zero control and it felt boardy. But there was tons of spin. The VS frame was plush, powerful, very precise, but less spinny. 4G cross is a nice comprimise. More spinny than full gut but less than PHT. Less comfort than gut but more control than PHT. Tension loss nearly the same as gut. I'll probably end up with two frames with VS/4G for competition and one with full VS for casual hitting with the wife and kids.

4G/OGSM is low powered and controlled. Boardy while being comfortable. I am not sure if I can beat it.

That's why I prefer lower power frames and softer strings. Usually that means a plush and low power setup. Even strung with full gut my Pure Storm GT is fairly low powered. In fact, once the PHT goes dead, the VS/PHT frame is more springy than the full VS frame due to difference in tension loss. My next experiment will be VS/Outlast. Looks to be soft and spinny but the tension loss is clearly higher than 4G.

i string my polys at 56-58.... lol. I'm in the club for sure. I'm also going to get me a few sets of BHSR17 to see how responsive it feels to my current BHBR.

One quick question:
I think many of 18X20 users prefer 17 gauge to 16 gauge string and I am wondering whether there is really a big difference between them. I guess thicker string will make your racquet feel tighter and boardy, but many 18x20 players say they, while they like tight and boardy feel, cannot handle 16 gauge string. I personally do not feel significant difference between these two gauges and I think my flat forehand go well with 16 gauge and 18X20 pattern. Do you think 18X20 pattern should go with a thiner string like 17, since a thicker string like 16 will make the feel too tight and boardy? |

I love a stiff string bed, was using a asian blx 90 with rpm team 17 gauge at 68 lbs. Now I am using a prince rebel 98 with gamma power play 18 gauge kevlar at 58 lbs. with yonex poly tour spin at 63 lbs. in the crosses.

I just used weisscannon SS in my rebel 98 at 68 lbs. and it was not boardy at all. Actually I really liked the feel even at that tension. You are right about SS having great control, that is one of its best characteristics. |
