My post was correct. If the particular event is an L5 national event(not all are) in 2013, you will get national points regardless of your section. You will only get sectional points if you are a resident of the section. In 2014, if the changes are implemented as planned, there will be no L5's and no national points.

Sorry I was not aware of any L5 or L4 national events. I hope to have a chance to get a definitive answer from the USTA folks at the upcoming winter national (their 3rd listening meeting) if they are eliminating L5 or they would let the sections decide if they would continue to host L5 for section ranking points in 2014 and beyond.

I've got no horse it this race, but it will be interesting to see how well these tournaments are received.

This series definitely adds more opportunities to play out-of-section players. But will the people most vocal against the USTA changes travel to play in these events even if they get NO points for their USTA national ranking? Anyone care to venture a guess?

If the posters objecting to the USTA's proposed changes are honest, and I believe they are, the concerns were:

1. Opportunities for memorable family trips to national tennis tournaments
2. Chances to play a diverse range of competition from out of section
3. Opportunities for college coaches to see players from different sections in a single location.

And all of this contributing to the TRN ranking.

I think the TRN National Series meets each of these concerns. So based on the opinions expressed in this forum, I would predict they will be well-attended.

If my judgment about the posts is wrong, and the real concern is USTA points, well the TRN Nationals won't help there, and that surely would detract from participation

I just wish there were some in Texas or Oklahoma. The ones listed are pretty far to travel to and we have only left our state once to play.

My son plays most of national events year around. We always minimize his missing school and try to control our budget and as such would choose a L3 or L2 that we can drive to or fly over in 2-3 hrs. Getting him national ranking points is important. But we will play TRN series if we can drive over in a few hours or we don't have to miss school.

I suppose that's what remains to be seen. This series of events should test that claim. Probably hard to form any conclusions based on the Costa Mesa event since it is happening so soon after the announcement, but once we get into the summer months we should have a clearer answer.
