Surgery is always a gamble and the recovery would have probably been longer then the layoff was....maybe much longer.

It's better let the body fix itself unless that is completely out of the question.

None of us know, really. We have to see how good his game is at the present time.

The recovery time for what he would have done surgery wise was less than he has been out so far. He would have also been pain free, which he clearly isn't right now.

This injury is definitely career threatening no matter how much Nadal and his camp denies it. I bet he pulls out of Chile after his first match there, and then withdraws from the rest of the SA swing afterwards.

Can't you tell by watching him practice against Uncle Toni ?

All of this is looking rather bleak.

In the practice video he doesn't look comfortable moving around....on clay of all surfaces.

I honestly don't see him coming back from this. He will tear his knee up again in the tournament and will have to withdraw for the rest of the SA swing and will play the rest of the clay season infiltrated just like last year.

I've got to say this is pretty depressing

I don't either. He has already missed 8 months yet his knee is still not healed. For someone like Nadal whose entire game depends on running, this is a career ending injury. I wish they would stop lying about it and just tell his fans the truth.

I'm less optimistic than ever after watching this.
It is rather worrying

He did have pain still before Abu Dhabi. How long it's been?, 1 month?.

In any case, if he still feels like this before IW/Miami, he shouldn't play those for sure.

Gee, it's easy to say now he was dumb not to have surgery. They said surgery wasn't a guarantee anyway and I agree with edmondsm it's better to see if it gets better without it.

If he doesn't get better maybe he should consider it again.

I understand surgery is an option for tendinitis, but just an option. (I could be wrong).

I don't know if that was a typing mistake, but he didn't say "hope disappears", but "Hope it (the pain) disappears".

I reckon he might seriously consider surgery after the clay season this year, I can't see how much more his knees can improve, especially if they haven't healed after all this time recovering, no way will they improve while he is playing competitive tennis.

Although I hope it doesn't come to that.

Yes, that would seem like a good moment to consider it, depending on how things go.

I wonder if his knee is hurting worse than it "normally" would.

If they do the surgery now by the time he comes back he will have been out for going on 2 years. May as well retire if that's what he is going to do. He should have done the surgery first instead of being afraid of it.

It's easy to say. And apparently the doctors thought it would be better to wait.

I didn't mean after the clay tournaments now though, I meant after RG/Wimbledon.

Good answer. I'm counting the days, just so impatient now!
ETA: if his knee still hurts, yeah, that's a big problem

Great pics CMM

This doesn't sound so bad, I think:

Well, with the enthusiasm of competing again, of playing again in a high level tournament, and well, expecting that the knee will respond well, and that it tolerates well the maximum load that is professional competition. The knee, in comparison with 4, 5 months ago, is infinitely better when it comes to imaging. It still bothers me some days, which makes it evident that I need time to continue to re-adapt the knee again to the maximum competition.
I'm looking forward to it (to playing), yes, evidently. If I'm not looking forward to it after seven months or six without competing, well (laughs), we wouldn't be doing well. Looking forward to go out, to train with the people from there, looking forward to play in Chile, the truth, that is the truth
An interview in English (with some footage of him practising):

Yes, that's a much more uplifting quote. Thanks Crisstti. I drank some Chilean sauvignon tonight to toast Rafa's return to the courts. It felt quite good!

Apparently this is what he's supposed to wear in South America. I like the clothes but I don't like the shoes.

I think this was supposed to be his AO outfit. I guess he is going to make use of it by wearing it in these small tournaments.

Oh, and the outfit is awful.
