Unfortunately, most of my MX racing was District36, NorCal. Raced every track up here multiple times except for HelvitiaPark in Sacto, which closed after my first race at Carnagie. GlenHelen was supposed to be woody for SoCal, twisty and sandy.
You should race Open class. It's usually the safest, the least crashes and bar banging, and the most fun because you don't do the above. 125's are fast small kids. 250's are the craziest fast young guys. Open is controlled mayhem, not just mayhem and adrenalin mixed with stupidity. And Vet races seldom produce spectacular crashes. |

Vet is over 30, any size bike. Opens start the best. 250's usually competitive. 125's the most fun, because you start bad, but ride the quickest lap times. I mostly rode 250's, made it thru VetIntermediate to Expert my first 10 races, but didn't make regular 125 Expert until after 300 races. Lucky for me, it took only about 40 Open races to make Expert, and after that, nobody enforced it for different sized bikes, so I just transferred to 125 and 250.
Vet is safe racing, OldTimers safer, at 55. |

KX ???
Does a confirmed Yamaha rider now work for Kawasaki? MX has switched to 4 strokes for tractibility, comfort, torque, low end, easy good starts, and mild strong power with less shifting and clutch work. 2 strokes are more touchy, quicker revving, less inertia to slow down, and lighter in weight ....barely. To me, a small weak guy, an Open class fourstroke would have more than enough power, easier to ride fast, slow down, and only suffer in slow tight turns. I always thought a CR-500 had too MUCH power, and I never lost a holeshot to CR-500's of Paul and Dave Bostrom (top VetPro riders in my day) using my KX-420's or RM-500's. |

I heard the 4 stroke 450 lacks torque compared to a 500 70 hp motor or a 250 2 stroke. The new KTM 450 puts out 60hp @11500rpm compared to 70hp @6000 and you get the max torque at the bottom end. I look at this way, it's like comparing a high reving turbo 4 banger to a chevy big block. The ktm 350 screams at 13500 talk about loud! I based my choice on numbers 70hp@6000rpm at 230lbs wet vs 60hp@11500rpm at 248 pounds. So 18 pounds less and 10 more hps and more torque sonner at a lower rpm. Plus the smell and sound of a 2 stroke can't be beat. I still will test ride a 2013 kx450f to hear a 4 stroke in person and check out the ride. Iam sure any new bike would kill my 85 cr500, 84 rm250, 83yz125 or 82 kx125.

I thought KX's were Kawasaki's.
CR's are Hondas. RM's for Suzuki YZ's for Yamaha I had the '83RM-250 watercooler, too pipey and lacked low end. |

Service Honda is the aftermarket company that started back in 1997 putting honda 500 motors in 250f al frames. In 2009 they are started doing kx 500 motors in the 250f frames too. Honda will not let them call the 500 a cr so it's a 500AF. They also do a Yamaha yz 300 which is a stroked out 2 stroke motor it's 285cc not sure why they call it 300? Can't wait for Feb when I get back my tax money so I can buy my 2012 Service Honda KX500AF with ported head, and Boysen rad valve for 14k.

I'd think Kawasaki would and have the right to complain about the KX designation.

Kaw is cool with them using it so are Yamaha using YZ on their 300 model. For some reason Honda does not want them to use the CR on their 500 oh well.

2013 KX 500AF, ported head, Boysen rad valve and custom suspension maybe 3 gallon tank. Shoulder healing fast, first time I have done free weight bench press in 20 years. I lifted 235 for 15 reps. Soon I will be back to 285 for 15 reps. Love to reach 305 for 15 reps.

report it and they will come along and clean it up. Sucks for them as it takes time to zap off topic but they are pretty nice about it if the thread gets taken over by offtopic stuff.
