Not to mention Hewitt spanked Federer during the first half of his career.

I lost a lot of respect for Hewitt after this interview. Nadal is a moonballer. Nothing to glorify here.

What do people expect really?
This is pro competition and the guy used to own Hewitt.
So it's a 100% biased point of view, considering he was spanked all the time by Fed. Hewitt knew it, Fed knew it, no possible friendship in locker rooms obviously.
Also Nadal is younger, maybe it made things easier between them. I dont know

Davydenko is the highest level Nadal has ever faced. Federer is the highest level Hewitt has ever faced. As you guys always say, "its a matchup thing"....

The Hewitt-Federer rivalry proves this, because when Federer was serve-volleying, Hewitt was beating him. As soon as Federer switched to predominantly baseline tennis, every match was dominated by Federer from that point on.

Always respected Hewitt, great interview. Will be sad when he hangs up his racket.

Yeah. He plays to his time. He is always the last to get up at the change of ends. Even when you are tossing the coin at the net he is jumping around and in your face. He sprints back to the base line after that and then and this is something the public don't see he hits the ball much harder in the warm-ups than anyone else. It creates a major presence.

Does it make a difference?

Of course. Matches are won and lost so many times in the locker room. Guys get in their mind how strong he is the warm-ups and that they will have to endure four hours of that to beat him they are beaten even before they step on court. But that's why I like him. He basically says you are going to have to kill me to beat me.

thank you lleyton for confirming that the nadal is a big disgusting golden bully who tries to intimidate his opponents with his dirty antics on the court and outside... but it's disappointing he kinda "admires" this aspect of the nadal.

also, he still didn't forget the issues with chela/nalbandian, apparently but it's cool if he's in good terms with delpo now.

When Hewitt retires it will be a huge blow to tennis as we know it. I'm not looking forward to that day.

thanks for the interview & link. I like the fact hewitt is talking very openly without too much "correctness", it doesn't happen very often with guys who are still on the tour.

does anybody know which second match against federer he meant? the 2004 or 2010 one? must be the 2nd but I'd be surprised

I don't see why it would. One would think being closer in age would make things easier if anything...

I think we understand now we Rosol had to sprint to the baseling.

Yep. It makes no sense that Hewitt would find it easier to get along with a guy years younger than him instead of a guy closer to his own age. Seems like Fed isn't the most sociable guy behind the scenes.

Great interview.

My take:

He identifies with Nadal and has a closer relationship with him.

He thinks Federer as more of a rival and someone who plays the highest levels of tennis due to his variety.

In the sense nadal was younger and was willing to indirectly learn from hewitt who was on the tour for a long time. Also when you're younger you think less tactical in the way you manage your relationships with other pro players, yoy're more spontenaous and natural.

I remember seeing nadal last year and was amazed at how hard he hit in warmups. Funny to read that because he destroys the ball.

After reading the interview, which is good, a few unconnected thoughts -

1. I'm surprised no one has mentioned that Nadal is an admitted fan of Hewitt since his younger days. Nadal has said he admired Hewitt's 'fighting spirit'. So it's no wonder the older guy likes Nadal back.

2. Hewitt is a boor - arrogant, disrespectful, racist and entitled. If Federer hadn't brought him down to earth, his head would have been bigger. That's my opinion of him. Donno why anyone would miss him. His game is also outdated - he's neither fast nor strong, doesnt have any weapons and defensively any number in the younger generation have surpassed him.

3. So Nadal's tactics and attitude are an open secret. I find such cheap gamesmanship despicable after having achieved so much. I guess class can't be acquired - either you have it or you don't.

4. Interesting Hewitt should say players come back after suspensions and win.

5. Federer is close to European players of his generation like Koubek, Haas, Chuidinelli, Henman, Mirnyi etc. He's not aloof, just doesnt hang out with the crowd he's not close to plus he's a family man unlike many others.
