Get thin twine and make a twine out of strands of twine, so you have a thicker twine made of that twine. Then just coat it in hot wax and call it cotton gut.

Seriously, I have some that I'm going to string up soon. It stretches quite a bit though (from what I've heard).

Very stiff too. Not smooth as Silk like I was expecting.

I've hit so much with it because its the default demo string in Dunlop rackets.

My friend CLAIMED his uncle used piano wire for tennis strings.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piano_wire

"Piano strings are among the most demanding of all applications of steel. Placed under high tension, they are subject to repeated blows, they are stretched and slackened during tuning and are still expected to last for decades."

Sounds like they hold their tension at least.

Metal wire
Metal wire, usually piano wire, was used in some historical racquets.

I would like to publicly apologize to David Thompson for thinking and implying he's a goddamn liar all these years.

Let's try a hybrid. The crosses of Bluegrass, Kentucky Bluegrass, Featherbed Bent, and Northern California Sensemilia, Cotton, and Hemp. Mains of WeedWhacker string. The amazing stuff about this is, that you can play 5 sets on it in the afternoon, take it home and just get stoned to the bejeezus-belt that night on this stuff.
