Nadal drops out of AO
=> Ferrer moves up with a gap of 1015 pts. Up till RG, here are what they have to defend: Ferrer: AO 360 + IW 45 + Miami 180 + Rome 360 + Madrid 180 + Acalpulco 500 + Barcelona 300 = 2225 Nadal: IW 360 + Miami 360 + MC 1000 + Madrid 90+ Rome 1000 + Barcelona 500 = 3410 So to sum up, Nadal is 1000 point behind (after AO point drops) and ~ 1200 more points to defend => a total of 2200 points to cover ....which I dont see as a very likely, and maybe very interesting too. Also, it marks the first time since 2005 Nadal is not seeded 1 or 2 at the clay slam.

I think you're wrong, OP didn't include two important facts, Nadal will play in Acapulco, and as I said, Madrid.

No doubt with points to defend getting dropped there is going to be an impact, how he is going to deal with this he has not said yet.

Nadal could be seeded as a qualie and it wouldn't matter. As long as he just *enters* (doesn't wtihdraw) he could probably beat everyone even if he faced top seeds early on. But being seeded 5th would really be no issue at all. Rafa on clay is like Kobe Bryant playing against high schoolers.

well said. Rafa's seeding doesn't matter one bit on red clay.

But I wouldn't be shocked if Nadal doesn't win Monte Carlo/Barcelona/Rome in 2013.

It is true that he could definitely be seeded 5 or lower, but it's not going to matter. We're talking about someone that's only ever lost once at this tournament.

all that would change is we'd have to wade through more "rafa is doping, no?" threads around here.

if Nadal even plays Roland Garros (I am coming to terms with the idea he might well already be retired), there is no way in hell he is seeded outside the top 4, no matter where he is ranked. I would be willing to bet money on that. They even seeded Venus Williams, Venus clay court guru Williams at #4 when she was ranked much lower than that in 2004, out of respect for her past record. She had even done poorly at the previous years RG and doesnt even have a good RG record, it was a respect for her overall stature in the game I guess.
Nadal as the all time greatest RG Champion would not be seeded below David Ferrer. He would be at minimum seeded #4. I would not even be surprised in the least if they seed him #3 over Murray given Murray's modest past record at RG, if Murray is still only ranked #3 by then.

Gonna be interesting. My guess is if he's in it, he'll win it. He obviously isn't willing to enter events anymore while dealing with lingering injures and illness. Seems like he's gonna do what Borg wanted to do after the 1981 US Open, play when he feels like it.

Nadal being #5 is probably more dangerous for everyone else than himself. It could cost Djokovic over 800 points, and Federer/Ferrer over 300.

RG Organziers should seed Nadal 4 regardless of rank.....it too much damage to the other 3.
