Another quick update: I was away for vacation for 4 days, and I wasn't able to do three of my workouts last week. So, I'm repeating week 10. This works out just fine, because this way I will be done with the second round of P90X just a day before I go to my trip to Jamaica on 9/20

I downloaded the insanity workout a few days ago after I stumbled upon it quite by accident. Even though I'm still not sure if I really want to get started with this program, I did the fitness test two days ago and just today did the first workout.

Basically as I get a little older (25 now) I really want to get my tennis up a level. And I'm absolutely convinced that in order to that the best thing to do is get my fitness level up a notch. It started more or less in feb 2012, when I started jogging. At first I struggled to finish a 4 km course, but soon I was running 7-8 km courses at good pace. But after the summer I stopped improving as I hit a plateau (hope that's correct English, sorry if not). And now around oct 2012 I started doing interval running instead. That was an eye opener. Basically I sprint for 200m all out and then I jog 200m and repeat it for as long as I can. Man, started doing that did wonders for my fitness and tennis. I started doing those because I read Federer does a lot of interval sprinting (and is very good at it, no surprise there). At first I thought it was going to be too hard. It is hard as basically you're out of breath the entire time. When you catch your breath, then you're off sprinting again. I love this now. I'm seriously addicted to this. It really has helped to build fast muscle fiber.

As I said I just started the insanity workout. I'm not sure what to do with my interval running. I don't really want to give that up. So I'm not sure if I want to follow the program to the letter. However it's going to be though to incorporate interval running in it.

For some reason I don't understand (maybe it's an early midlife crisis ) I really want to get ultra fit. Train like a pro if you will. That thought has sort of grown over me over the year now. And it get's more intense as time passes by. The insanity looks good. No equipment, lot's of cardio, stretching. Everything looks good. I thought the first workout was doable although I'm not at the level of the people in the DVD's. I would say I'm about at 80-90% of their level. It got though to keep up with them at the last 10 minutes. It just day 1 for me, so I'm assuming it's only going to get thougher from here.

My biggest fear is going to combine these workouts with my daily work. I know I'm going to hate doing these workouts after a long day of work and it's though not missing a workout when there is overtime or something else at work. At the weekend or at the holidays it's fine, I will definitely be motivated but I know I'm not going to like it after work. I guess I will be needing my sleep to stay fresh. I'm horrible at getting out of bed in the morning as I snooze way too long. Maybe this can help me getting out of bed a little easier in the morning.

It's the perfect time to do this for me. Competition doesn't start till May for me, so there is plenty of time. I play tennis 2 times a week now during the winter, but it's ok if my tennis suffers a bit in the moment due to fatigue of the program. The idea is that it'll be worth it in the future. My time at my 8 km course or how long I'll last in my interval running will also be good barameters to see if there's improvement in my fitness. It certainly looks like a good program for me. I'm not looking to bulk up or anything, just get in the best possible shape I can be. Hopefully this will push me to do so. Let me know if there is anybody interested in my progress, then I'll keep you all up to date.

Cheers for reading
thx

Insanity is great. Loved it. Did it about a year, year and a half ago and it got me in top shape, and my tennis improved dramatically along with it. In fact I won a league title when I was at the tail end of my two-month program. Would love to do it again but am now living in an upstairs apartment and don't feel right about all the jumping that's involved with people down below.

The running program will be tough to keep up. Maybe just do it once a week? The Insanity workout is really grinding on the body if you stick with it and go all out with the workouts. I mean, it's six days a week of stressing the body a lot, so adding on top of that is tough. I only did tennis outside of Insanity but had to really space out my court time to not overtax myself. But the fitness level completely translated to a better court performance. Good luck, good man.

I can't believe it's been 18 months since I posted this first!

Since then, I almost completed round 2 of P90X, but started having my shoulder/arm muscles pulled since I increased weight, so I figured I should switch to something else....

And I did! I did about 3 weeks worth of Insanity last fall, then moved to a new place and never finished it due to a busy schedule (and a lot of tennis I played in the fall/winter last year!)

However, things have slowed down, and I started doing GPS Rushfit, and I completed it this weekend! It was awesome! I will post a separate, more detailed write up about it soon. I decided not to take any breaks, and I'm doing TapOut XT next. I did the first video, and it was really tough, but really really fun! I will write something about Tapout too once I'm a couple weeks into it.

Thanks for bumping this up,I just read the whole thread with great interest and am going to try a modified p90x in spring. My goal at the end of last season was to train hard all winter for better fitness and injury prevention in 2013. I stumbled on a book called "Testosterone Advantage Plan" that I used to design a routine. It is basically a middle aged man's guide to eating and weight training written by Men's Health magazine that I found on Amazon used. I supplement the weight training with once a week casual tennis and twice a week hot yoga, the yoga has been an epiphany, wow. I have experienced dramatic results in just two months and it has motivated me to maintain a high level of fitness with new goals. I am anticipating a great tournament season in 2013, all good stuff for us old guys (I am 45 this week, wonder what the average age is here?)

If you are into Men's Health magazine they released a program recently called Speed Shred. It kind of mimics some of the spartan workouts they publish. Most workouts are only 30 minutes long. It is not as expensive as p90x and it was a lot of fun. Very functional exercises that utilize hips, core, and shoulders, as opposed to standing around doing curls. The guy who runs the video is pretty funny too.

I watched the demo video, looks great, thanks for the info. Did you complete the whole program? Is it too intense to do during tennis season? My plan now is to back way off of the weight lifting for summer based on my reading of periodization training but keep up the cardio and yoga.

most of it. The way it is broken up is there are three "lift days" that are total body focused workouts. Some use weights others are bodyweight only. Then there are three "heat workouts". You can definitely play tennis on those days. Two are cardio style and one heat workout is isometrics. They are good workouts but won't kill your legs for tennis. I really think you could play tennis with any of the workouts because although you get a good workout in and your heartrate up, the workouts are short enough that they won't kill you for a day, a la P90x chest and back.

There are also a number of other workouts included in addition to the "program". It really is a lot of stuff for the money. Highly recommended.

What. The. Hell.

It went from like 90 to 200 in terms of difficulty and intensity. I was not prepared for that kind of a leap. Also didn't help that they pair two workouts - the fit test and the max interval back to back on you.

Then I had a tennis match with a buddy of mine tonight and my legs, well, they didn't come with me to the courts. Month 1 was difficult enough balancing this and tennis, but manageable. I have no idea what I'm going to do about this Month 2 plus two leagues that I'm now in.
I just finished the day one of month two workouts.
I feel the same way. Adding the hr long max workout on top of the fit test is a cruel joke. I was watching him do some of the new moves and just laughed....but was able to push thru and do some of all of them.

Another very positive endorsement for the program.
I'm loving it, and my fitness has gone up an incredible amount.
