I was trimming the string from a reel for my crosses (2 piece) an I cut it way to short. Luckily it was only a cheap poly.
And now for where I need some help. I'm new to stringing, but I know where things are supposed to go. When I cut the right length of string this time (I put an extra 5 ft on just to be safe) and I was weaving the crosses (pusher style??) the string (a smooth poly) would sort of slip through my hands, I could get a few weaves and then my fingers would outrun the string. I don't know if its because I have sweaty hands (and fingers). Any suggestions other than keep practicing? TIA

you got it. practice.
but the stiff polys are harder to weave, IMO. and make sure you're stringing (weaving) one cross ahead of the one you are about to tension, this helps also.

Yeah, I'm weaving one ahead so I'm good there.

Are you pulling enough string through the grommet to complete the cross before starting your weave? Or, are you trying to pull the string at the same time you are weaving? The latter is an inefficient technique. Otherwise, like anything else, it is just a matter of practice.

Are you weving one cross string ahead?
That is where you weave another cross string before you tension the one cross string before that one. It helps weave musch easier, I also pull most of the slack with the one ahead as well as it is easier on the string as less friction. Also it helps to pull some of the string through the grommet before you start weaving, at least thats what I do. |

Extra 5 feet of string? Why so much?

Good advice has been given. If you haven't already done so, watch YULitle's video on weaving crosses:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0FPGEBcBHo (and equally, if you haven't seen them before, check out his YouTube channel).

If your going to do a 2 piece, then have a measuring stick and measure out 20ft. Cut 20ft of string from the reel precisely and save it every time you cut out 20ft. You don't really need an extra 5 ft. 20 ft is well over enough for me. You can hopefully get an extra half set or 2 if you measure out the strings shorter to about 18 ft or 19.

I couldn't help it... I needed to do the racket, but I also needed to eat. It was one of those Cordon Bleu stuffed chicken things that have ham and cheese inside...

It took forever because I strung a couple crosses and thought "CRAP! I don't have enough string!" so I yelled some obscenities and watched football. I asked my dog to string, but she was huddled under the table hiding from fireworks... That didn't work out... Am I crazy?
