GA, you know my feels about guns, check my posts here on TT all pro gun to the teeth, but this last go around was close home, all the sandy hook and surrounding pro gunners were silenced.

I am all for tennis to be cool, weapons are cool there is no doubt. I was even thinking tennis should adapt some MMA cage fighting ideas, look what it did to boxing.

Agree, love an ad that makes tennis cool and exciting for kids and don't see the connection. Thanks for the links to those ads, hadn't seen them. Federer can actually act.

I guess Head is doing it to a lesser extent with their ad depicting racquets are weapons like guns and are cool.

Are you implying that these ads are violent? Really? This is NOTHING compared to the crap that's on TV screens in prime time everyday. Now, I'm not excusing that crap, I'm just saying in no way is tennis linked with violence. The last ad with Roger is just funny - obviously tongue in cheek.

Look, CT shook us ALL, but lets be real about the debate. You gotta start with the worst cultural offenders, and that's certainly not tennis.

There are already over seven million people in the American penal system.

There is always something worse, but there must be something cleverer to do than associate tennis racquets with weapons and still appeal to young adults?

Sure. I don't find it all that brilliant from a marketing perspective anyways. I'm in marketing, it's not easy. Look at car commercials - same old thing over and over.

Sandy Hook was an event, but it is used here to refer to the prevalence of violence and its cultural acceptance.

Maybe you should complain to Wilson also because they named one of their lineup "Blade" and it condones violence like the man in china that ran around stabbing children.

The two big things to appeal to are sex and death and although its been said before it remains true: we tend to censor sex and tolerate violence.

If this was an ad full of even cartoonish images referring to explicit sexual devices it wouldn't have left the drawing board.

Blade as a word has a lot of cultural connotations (work tools and beautification come to mind), but if they associated it directly with swords or other explicit means of violence then they would be condoning violence.

This thread and it's premise is so over the top.

Really? We are giving the assailant that much power? We can't even use any reference to weapons in marketing? They are not even showing a gun here. All weapons? Forever? Even if we use the word or meaning "weapon" loosely and cleverly? (weapon of love, weapon of seduction, weapon of destiny). This is still our country and our language and it can be used for good or bad. It's our choice and it up to us to use it correctly.

Too much power, time, and attention are right now being given to this mass murder and he has officially hijacked a completely amazing effort by a marketing team to energize a public about (what some call) a dying American sport. smh

I can't really say I have a strong feeling either way. It's a nice enough ad. But I'm not really sure if any specific ad will get anyone to change their minds or do this or that. It's all brand exposure. Gotta do something to keep your name out there or else you become irrelevant.

I do like the second ad posted, the "spin attacks". Nice play on words.
