Comparing what these guys do with HSers is ridiculous. Runners keep improving into their 30's. I wouldn't be surprised it a guy like Ferrer was easily in the 16's. |

Comparing them to high school runners is not ridiculous. Should you compare them to adult long distance runners? IF you lined up the top 100 high school distance runners to run a 5k against the top 100 ATP players, the best tennis player would finish in 101st place. |

You obviously have never done any competitive running or have any concept of elite levels of competition.
In 2011 the #100 best 5k time runner in high school ran a 15:20. Keep in mind this was a cross country race not straight track so the times are actually higher than they would be on a track. The guy who ran this 15:20 ran a 4:10 1600 meters (mile equivalent) IF anybody on the planet can run a 4:10 mile without any training, they have a future in the olympics. Exactly who among the ATP can run that fast? If you think it is that easy go out and run a 5k and let me know your time. The average 5k time for athletic adult males is close to 30 minutes. The difference between 15:20 and 16-17 minutes is HUGE. If you beat someone by that much time they would be so far behind you that on most cross country courses if you turned around you would not even be able to see them. A pro tennis player beating an elite level high school cross country runner in a long distance race is about as likely as a 5 star tennis player losing a tennis match to a professional runner. I'm pretty sure the top guys could go sub 17 no problem, the story was that Ivanesevic could regularly win the 10K race that was held in his town.

Think the Murraker and Ferrerai could run sub 20min no problemo...well documented they both run a bit, Ferrer it's been said has gone for a run after a match. fwiw my best Xcountry time was at a sectional meet on a golf course with some downgrades, @ 18:30, ran 3rd or 4th on the team my 1st and only yr. We had 2 guys ran 16min best times, one ran in college. Takes me 30+mins now 30yrs later:0

Running is easy, running competitive times in any race requires specific training. Training Specificity says that while training for one thing may improve another, you will never improve as quickly nor to the same maximum degree as someone who focuses. Also it is interesting to note that the top high school times of today are better than the olympic times run in the 1950s and 60s training protocols in high school more closely resemble professional runners. Goober is probably right, the top runners would beat most if not all of the tennis players.

I bet Murray can break 20. Just read about his workouts. They are very run oriented and seem a lot more taxing than a 5k.

I am a 30 year old car mechanic, never-was tennis player, and wasn't fast enough to even count in the scoring of my cross country team. Murray is an elite athlete, one of the 5 best in the world, saying you bet he could break 20 min is like saying you bet he could break 100mph with his serve. J

Yea 20 is not the measure that I would use, 18 is a bit tougher but I ran 17:15 last year with only a couple months of training. The top high school athletes are much faster than that.

Yup- The top high school runners run in the low 14s on a cross country course. Some of them could might be able to break 14 minutes on a straight track but 5k is not contested in T & F in high school. A lot of people who don't run really don't have the concept of times. Someone who runs a 5k in 15:01 is in a completely different class of runner than someone who runs a 15:59. It is like the difference between a 5.0 and 6.0 tennis player. They may look the same from outward appearances, but they are totally different levels in reality. You can shave off a minute running when you are running 5ks 20s and 30s pretty easily. Once you get to the top winning a race by minute is a HUGE difference. |

I'd think any of the top 200 player's who run for a living (play baseline tennis) can run a mile under mid 5's, but few would get into the highest 4's because they don't specialize in running.
For Beernutz, I never was a long distance runner, so higher 5's the best, in college. CC class had us running 6 miles for the gym period of one hour. I always finished and took a shower before hustling to the next class. As you know, periods are on hour total. |

I'd be lucky to break 20 minutes for one mile today. Having NOT run more than 10 steps in the last 4 years, and the resulting atropy of the legs, has me wondering if I could WALK a mile faster than trying to run it.

Agreed, but if we looked at the fitness of a Murray/Nadal/DJ/Hewitt, it's not really that far fetched.
Don't think DelPo can run a mile under highest 5's. Nor would Monfils be inclinded to try that hard. Querrey would die, and Isner barely hanging in there at low 6's. Can Ferrer run it less than lowest 5's? |

Jolly, how is your health ie back and shoulder and wrist? r u going to play10-12 touraments for 2013 and get a top ranking or r u retired? I checked your results for last year only one event with a first round loss and a overall record of 20-47 going back to 2003 not too bad. I checked out 2 of my friends records and they killed it over the past ten years 281-125 and 153-44 wow!!
PS:Build any engines and or cars and race them at E-Town?
