Perhaps Stan Smith, Ilie Nastase's great rival. Smith wasn't not that fast but long arms helped his range.

I believe that Vilas was never no. 1 (quick or not).

Smith was not a great mover but he was not that bad, he was quite nimble for his size.

I loved John Newcombe and he was a great player but he wasn't a genius of the court like Nastase.
But Newk could peak at majors.
Nastase's major record was disappointing, to put it mildly.

However, Nastase hold the Masters record for many many years. He suprassed himself in that great event.

I think Nastyīs main sorrow, other than Wimbly would be the Davis Cup.The atmosphere of the 1972 final is one of the highest of any international team event.

Vilas was never n°1 in ATP ranking, but was considered as the real n°1 in 1977.
