When I was racing motocross back in the late '70's and early '80's, I trained by surfing and hijinxing while taxi driving.
We'd run a 4.7 mile loop around LakeMerced around 38 minutes. The fast guys around 30. |

http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/4/4_1/96.shtml Not one person on this thread can run a 17:00 5K (5:30 pace). Why don't we all run a 5K in the next week and post our times. Anyone up for the challenge? Most of you guys are claiming to be "advanced" and even "elite" (without even training at all). We must have a very large group of genetically superior "outliers" that are participating in this thread. http://www.ehow.com/info_8763985_com...e-5k-time.html As for tennis professionals, I'd be surprised if many of them could break 20:00. Perhaps some of the high mileage tennis training athletes (I'm thinking Ferrer) could approach 18:00, but I wouldn't bet on it. What makes me laugh most is that I've been advocating for years that people should run more distance type training at ever increasing paces to build a solid cardio base, and I've been consistently shot down. But now I see it all clearly. You guys don't need to train this way, because most of you can break 20:00 5K times without without training at all. With a little training (maybe a month or two?) you guys are cranking out 18:00 and even 17:00 minute 5K's. Where the hell where these amazing athletes when I was growing up and in high school / college? Heck, I remember running with a kid on one of the professional soccer teams in Frankfurt, and he couldn't even stay with me on my 6:30 - 6:45 training runs. The only guy with any idea of reality on this thread is Goober (and Magmaster). But I want to see Jolly crank out that 20:00 5K tomorrow.

Whatever you want.
20:00 5K is only doable if you've been doing some training (or are just very, very athletically gifted in distance running, and I'm willing to bet you aren't or someone would have wanted spotted you and developed you when you were younger). How are we going to verify your time? I want this run in the next few days (no training or practice beforehand).

For the record, as I near 40 years of age, I can't run a 20:00 5K. And I used to be able to run a 16:00 5K, 15 years ago, and I still run ~20 miles a week and play tennis 2-3 times per week (and can outlast most anyone on the court from a cardio perspective).
To run 16:00, I had to train just like the link indicates. 50+ mile training weeks for several years with lots of "strength" running as well. It was hard (at least it was for me). http://www.ehow.com/info_8763985_com...e-5k-time.html 7-minute pace would be a good goal for me these days.

Is 20:00 going to be the goal time or do you want to shoot for a faster time?

Wow!! Being able to do a 5:30 pace with little training is very impressive. You must have a large cardio base from playing soccer?

Next race is in 6 days. Just need to make sure it doesn't conflict with a mixed match. I would chose a more challenging time than 20 min if the race wasn't in January, but that should be good. J

I may have understated the training i worked my butt off. I was testing out the hr training concept and was logging a lot of miles. Today? Maybe i could do sub 20, it would hurt a lot.

This should be interesting. According to the race results from last week if you broke 20 minutes you would have placed 27th out of 959 runners. Only 4 guys broke 18 minutes and I am sure all 4 probably are serious amateur runners that train all the time. I don't know what kind of shape you are in and I have never seen you run, so I wouldn't take that bet. All I am going to say if you can finish in the top 3% of 5k race with no training you are a naturally gifted runner. |

Ok I feel a little better..lol. I said 20 because I was doing them in 23 minutes. Which is not great, but I am not a good long distance runner.

It is possible for a person with a very developed "endurance motor" to prepare for a race with less specific training but they will still never do as well as the specific athlete. Good read http://www.bodyrecomposition.com/tra...ng-part-1.html

In August I signed up for a 5k because I was going to be rained out of tennis that Saturday, and I figured I should do some running in prep for the Tough Mudder in October. I had not run outside of a tennis court in over a year, and ran the race in the pouring rain, with half a bottle of 1792 trying to fight it's way out of me. Didn't push it because I had a full day of tennis the next day and didn't want my legs to be shot. I finished 2nd in my age group and 9th overall. This was the captain of my HS cross country team. http://www.all-athletics.com/node/92630 He was a gifted natural runner. I was the guy who came along for the bus rides, that everybody had to wait for at the end of practice. J

jolly can run a 5k in 17 mins in his dreams. That's 11.00 mph on a treadmill for 17 mins. Can someone sign him up and watch him run and post the results?

I'm gonna do this too, and mrs pickle wants to join as well. My goal is to finish. As jolly can attest to, I'm not too keen on running.

23 minutes is not actually that bad for an athletic adult male that doesn't train specifically long distance runs. In fact as much in awe some people seem to be of ATP players long distance running capabilities, I would say you actually could probably beat or at least stay even with some guys in the top 100- Isner, Querrey, Tomic to name a few. Most of these tennis players probably never even run a 5k race. If you just told them to run one without any preparation some of them would either go out to fast and run out of gas the last 2k or they would jog the whole way and end up with a time over 30 minutes. |
