I don't know how anyone can pick Safin for this. It was a great stroke and very compact, but it sure as hell didn't look nice.

Cool

Let's logically analyze one yet mentioned player's arsenal and resume...player A won slams on all surfaces, was #1 for, at the time, a record number of weeks and competed/won against greats from three distinct eras. Player A had a rubbish serve, finicky forehand and only adequate volleys/overhead. What he did have was a classic 2hbh that he used to punish his opponents in baseline rallies, ROS, net approaches and passing shots.

Player A is James Scott Connors and no one ever had such a devastating 2hbh weapon. The elegance of it was his supreme timing generated through graceful footwork...he never seemed hurried or out of balance when striking his backhand. Also, his ability to carve a bit of sidespin on high balls without going one-handed was totally unique.

It was a great shot but ugly as sin. It has no place in this thread.

It is smooth and great, but I still don't think it's exactly "elegant." It's a really good question, OP.

The words "elegant" and "two-hander" do not belong in the same sentence.

When I think of elegance in the twohander, I think of very clear unwinding of the body and an evident Kinetic chain, so my vote would probably be Djokovic, but it looks better in slow motion. Soderling also had a pretty smooth two hander.

have to think on this.
agassi, nalbandian and co. have great 2hbhs, but I wouldn't think of them as elegant per se.

honorable mention: Juan Carlos Ferrero

Agree. JCF is a good example.

I think the "ugly as sin" image in your memory was the forced scrambling on the other side of the net in reaction to that beautiful 2hbh. It's not ugly to take shots on the rise when you "pure" them every time. As I said, that ability was all in his superalitive footwork. He was a mirror image of Segura's 2hfh and many consider that stroke as close to perfect as anyone has ever hit.
