Default Have you had a player sign up for your team univited?

Let's say he got the team number for your team from someone else and just paid and signed up. You know who he is and talked to him about the team, but you didn't actually invite him on the team. Nice guy, average to below average for his level. Don't really need him for as a "body" or to help the team win. Just keep him or send him packing?

I vote for "gentle discouragement."

I would write to him and say that you noticed he signed up. I would tell him that you're happy to have him continue on the team, but you need to explain how you expect the season to go. Explain that you can't promise how much he will play, or that he will play singles, or that he will have an established partner. Blah, blah, blah.

Then if you really really want him to step off, you can close with how you can help him find another team if he would prefer that.

As far as the money thing ... If he switches he's teams that is easy ... Section coordinator just presses a couple buttons.

Cindy's "gentle discouragement" is a possible but I think I would be a little more direct--"I'm sure you didn't understand sign-up protocol; you have to be invited to join a team and since we have a full team per our plans, I am afraid you will have to switch teams. Why don't you check with the
League coordinator and she/he will help you with that. You won't lose your fee."

I've been a team captain for around twenty years and never had that happen. I have had a couple of equally tough ones where a player contacted me and basically begged to be on the team!

Good luck.
