No, none of us know math now, not after watching this match.

If she did win next 2 and make QFs, she go up to about 25. That doesn't account for other players rising / falling though.

Think she'll struggle against Sloane though.

true dat. might be a different story ..... except I almost think nothing was said because the crowd was 90% in favor of Laura ..... and if the same holds true in her match against stevens, then I'm not sure what w/b said

Kvitova did a few grimaces and eye rolls toward the end there, but her obnoxious screeching balanced it out ..... not sure whether sloane has any bad habits she can retaliate with, but shouldnt someone be able to serve without all those ball toss catches?

It begins to boarder on gamesmanship

Well, Robson could handle Petrifying's SHRIEKING! And faces.

I really felt Robson just couldn't do it, but like Andy Murray at US Open was proved wrong to my delight.

I heard one of the commies say that Judy Murray was in Laura's entourage ..... guess she's been having some influence on her training, too ..... can't imagine Judy would find all that toss-cheating acceptable!

Judy and Laura, I have no problem with that.

As for ball tosses, can we cut the child some slack when she's against a #2 Wimby champion 90 degrees overtime midnight in front of 14,000 delirious Auzzies?

My eyes are still bleeding. What a horrible, horrible, horrible match.

Congrats Laura, but that was terrible, even for WTA standards.

It's definitely massive since it brings her closer to the magic 32 ranking when she stops meeting players like Kvitova in the 2nd round.

Laura was doing a lot of catching of her tosses. She wasn't cheating, her tossing was just poor.

Horrible match, reminded why I hate the WTA in the first place. Kvitova was a mess, Laura not that better.

Happy for Laura though, finally someone we can get behind.

it's a word I picked up from natalia (see above). could also be called "toss catch 'cheating.'" it's when someone steps up to the line as if to serve the ball, then interrupts their service motion by throwing the toss in the air and then catching it before serving. one commentator pointed out that laura was doing it excessively, even regularly twice with every other serve, varying when she did it just enough to avoid forming a pattern. a way of getting into the head of the opponent when done that much. and clearly it was getting into kvitova's head because she was reacting, such as exhaling and bending forward, touching her racket to the floor and leaning on it as if trying to catch her breath, while glancing up at laura through her eyebrows skeptically, etc., etc., etc. ..... IOW, it's a form of gamesmanship:

Gamesmanship is the use of dubious (although not technically illegal) methods to win or gain an advantage in a game or sport, without being able to be technically accused of violating any particular rule ... Wiki

Like the receiver raising their hand up, without any apparent reason, just as the server is going into his/her motion. That kind of thing. Except that Laura Robson did it A LOT last night.

I've noticed this myself. She is young to be already getting the service yips. I hope she and her coach get it sorted out before it becomes too much of a problem!

I'm sure she wasn't doing it deliberately. How many missed ball tosses is a player allowed before a fault is called on the serve?

I do not think deliberate as she was doing it at Olympics and US quite a lot

that's just it. it's not against the rules, as far as i know. remember when ivanovic was doing it? she got flack for it, and i believe she still does it sometimes, but it takes effort and working on it to stop doing it .... which ivanovic hardly ever does it anymore as far as i know, but there was a while there when she was doing it so much that it became a problem.

Oh.

That's going to be annoying when Sloane plays her.
