saturday morning, snow on the ground, 16F..... shoveled court and did 2 hours of volleys.... afternoon, court is dry, 20F, did 2 hours of hitting, mostly volleys.
sunday morning 1.5 hours of hitting, afternoon, nice sunny 33F, 2 hours of playing games. if it's warm enough to jog, it's certainly warm enough for tennis! |

Wow. That is a lot of tennis to play in not-so-ideal conditions. Your enthusiasm/passion for the game is great!

I'm not sure what you mean by that, but I hope it was said in a positive way. Because volleys are the best way to win and end points early.

Have you played on courts with a full sheet of ice? Looks amazing. Looks Beautiful. Plays painful.

Volleys are essential to winning tennis, not this baseline, forehand backhand rubbish

I wish my groundies would be a step behind my volleys. Right now, it's almost 2 full steps back.
Hitting today, nice 52 degree sunny skies, volleys seem almost 5.0 level, while groundies middling 3.5. Against a hard hitter, I can place 80% of my volleys into center of NML and the rest will once bounce to him, him never needing to hit any shorthops or two bouncers. I can barely hit 4 groundies in a row at that depth. |

My volleys are way behind groundstrokes. I can't stop putting a small swing on them...

What I hate the most is, when you're rally/practicing volleys, it's like cake. But come match time, it's the hardest shot to do. That means I don't have enough volleying practice. P.S.*, I also like it when most other baseline bashers from other courts go "WTF is he doing?" when I'm up at the net.

morning 7-7:45, wet ball, mostly volleys;
noon - went alone for serve practice. 150 balls. 5:30-6:30, took son to jr clinic, was quite fun watching kiddos knocking foam balls around with lots of enthusiasm. evening, 7 - 8:45, hitting around with semi-wet balls, playing points, serve volley, chip charge etc. too much tennis ! court has wifi now.... when it warms up, i can see myself setting up office there Last edited by luvforty : 01-29-2013 at 05:13 PM. |

PacLefty...
A small swing is needed on every volley except a pure block. But it has to be done with a conti grip and an underspin stroke, so the ball skids on landing, and underspin gives the depth control. Very hard for modern grip players to learn to volley, what with SW forehand grips and 2hbh backhands. You just gotta spend a few days hitting ONLY conti grip, EVERY stroke, and try to slice approach to just inside service line positioning. |
