What an awful/good idea.

Awful that we have to pay to use a user based video streaming website.

Good that some of the channels that make their videos(gaming, music, etc.) might get some more revenue.

Though I still think Youtube should just keep their ad profit going, they make enough as is.

Enough is never enough in the business world.

YouTube has saved me a bucket of money for years. Every kind of music you need is just a search button away. If I have to pay 5.00 per month it's still a good deal. Haven't bought a Cd since forever.

Please fix the link in the first post. It's also nice to paste in the bit of the content so we don't have to load another page -- some of them are awfully slow with all the ads and images.

A new chapter in online video is about to begin. YouTube is prepping to launch paid subscriptions for individual channels on its video platform in its latest attempt to lure content producers, eyeballs, and advertiser dollars away from traditional TV, according to multiple people familiar with the plans.

YouTube has reached out to a small group of channel producers and asked them to submit applications to create channels that users would have to pay to access. As of now it appears that the first paid channels will cost somewhere between $1 and $5 a month, two of these people said. In addition to episodic content, YouTube is also considering charging for content libraries and access to live events, a la pay-per-view, as well as self-help or financial advice shows.

It's not clear which channels will be part of the first paid-subscription rollout, but it is believed that YouTube will lean on the media companies that have already shown the ability to develop large followings on the video platform, including networks like Machinima, Maker Studios and Fullscreen. YouTube is also looking outside its current roster of partners for candidates.
Seems this is an option for content providers to earn something. This does not suggest everything will be paid. I just skipped through it, but that's what it seemed like.

Depending on how they structure it, the attempt is likely to fail IMHO. If it only affects select "channels", then it will probably work. But, most of the stuff on youtube is inane so it is hard to imagine anyone would pay for it. Although, I could say the same thing about TV.
