Narrow-minded people like you need to be reminded that Davis Cup is a team event and when your team only consists of 2 top 100 players it's kinda difficult to win. But Federer shows up more often than not and pretty much carries the team. And I'm pretty sure Nadal has sat back and let his teammates do all the work and then showed up just for the final. But one player cannot win the Davis Cup. Do you understand now?

No you missed my point entirely. Wawrinka has slammed Federer for not competing enough in DC (which is in fact a crock of BS). Hence why I made a joke (or maybe not so much of one) that he would dislike this. Like a YouTube video.

How? Nadal has won Davis Cup with his team multiple times, and has a higher winning percentage (Nadal has fewer wins, but he is younger, so that is expected). federer on the other hand, has a worse winning percentage AND has never won Davis Cup with his team after choking in the semi-final in 2003. Seems like Almagro is the new federer of Davis Cup.

Must admit this is one of the funnier things I've read in a while.

I do see he's one of 299 players to get it - is that right? The DC website keeps crashing for me.

Just hope the Swiss press doesn't get a hold of this while the tie in Geneva is going on without him . . .

Okay, I'm a Fed fan and I laughed at this. I'm sure Roger has wanted the DC for his country at one point (no matter how much the haters deny it) but I'm also sure he knows it probably won't happen and accordingly reduced his investment. There was never unconditional, unrealistic devotion on his part which was right because doing that would also mean messing up his singles career and that would be a far bigger blow to him and the Swiss considering he's the only great male tennis player ever produced by the country.

I'd say, for pure DC commitment, he's not my pick (and I'd rather it remained that way for a while selfish though it might sound or rather it is. No apologies of course )

DC FYI: McEnroe 59-10 overall, 41-8 singles, 18-2 in doubles. Jimmy Connors would usually skip Davis Cup for $$-exos and why he and Arthur Ashe (long-time DC supporter as both player and captain) had a chilly relationship.

Here is the info from the Davis Cup website...

Commitment Award
This Award is being presented by the ITF to players who have shown long-standing dedication to representing their country in this prestigious competition. Each Award recipient has competed in a minimum of 20 home or away ties or 50 ties at any level of the competition (including Zone Group Events) over their career.

The Award was conceived as part of the ITF’s 2013 Centenary celebrations and will be launched at the 100th Davis Cup Final in 2012. Initially 299 players met the criteria with awards presented throughout 2013. All recipients are recognised on an honours board at the ITF headquarters and in a dedicated section on the official Davis Cup website. The record holder for the most ties played in all levels of the competition is Domenico Vicini from San Marino, who played a total of 87 ties. With 66 ties played, Italy’s Nicola Pietrangeli heads the elite list of players who have competed in 20 home or away ties for their country.

Now, I fail to see why Federer wouldn't be deserving out of 299 players. My guess is they picked a minimum of 1 player from each participating country. Please tell me which player from Switzerland you haters would pick over Federer and give me a valid argument to support that choice. The OP should have mentioned the other 298 winners of this "award" in their original post.

Maybe Stan Wawrinka should get one too. Hopefully, he has one already.

Agassi, McEnroe, Roddick, Stan Smith and the Bryan brothers are also receiving the award.

No he isn't on the list. But Stan (37 rubbers) has a better participation record than Nada (27 rubbers) and Djokovic (30 rubbers).

If you look at # of ties played:

Federer: 22
Wawrinka: 17
Djokovic: 17
Nadal: 14

This is an encouragement award for Fed to motivate him to continue trying to win that Elusive Davis Cup!

Good for them, they deserve it -esp. Smith.

Stan Smith led the US to a very controversial (and very deserved) Davis Cup victory in 1972.

For starters, the US (as defending cup champion) placated a whinning Romanian Davis Cup team led by Ion Tiriac and willingly gave up its rightful home court venue and allowed for the tie to be played in Bucharest, Romania instead ("blacked out with no viewing media coverage" behind the Iron Curtain).

This 1972 Davis Cup final involved quite possibly the most blatant attempt at cheating in the history of the Davis Cup.

Tom Gorman (bad back) lost his two singles rubbers. Smith won his and then won the piviotal middle doubles rubber with Eric Van Dillon as his partner. At 2-2 it came down to the deciding 5th rubber vs. Tiriac.

Long story short: besides the black out, tennis officials testified years later about the various methods of cheating (e.g. line calls, etc.) by the home team's Davis Cup officials that were to be employed against the US. The intimidation of the chair umpire and linespersons got so rediculous to the point of Tiriac during the later stages of his deciding match vs. Smith actually having linespersons--LINESPERSONS!--massaging his leg cramps-LMAO! The deciding rubber between Smith and Tiriac went 5 sets:

the winner: Stan Smith, 6-LOVE.

on-topic: Federers played over 50 DC matches? Give him the award already. Besides, who here really cares about some 'trinket' award "who's who" list?

After yet another outstanding grand slam win guess where he will be next at an indoor clay court representing his country while fed is having a nap, yes you should feel embarrassed.
