After 35 years of playing very high level tennis (once on grass) I find it difficult to dumb down my game for the sake of other's feelings.

Pretty much sums up the thread!

When I left the SCTA junior tour in 1984 I was often asked to play charity events for Korean orphans and battered trailer prostitutes in Ojai, Ca.

While many of my partners were high level several were 3.5 or below and it was a struggle to not want to crush them and make them quit the game.

Cindy's struggle is universal. Playing against uncoordinated 3.5s is very exhausting. When you reach 4.5 you are better equipped to deal with low level social mixed dubbles slobs.

Well, I think I have a definitive answer on whether I struck the right balance: A repeat invitation to play with this group.

Thank goodness for that.

You could be right but I don't think it's necessarily a definitive answer to your question about striking the right balance.

The group could have been very polite or forgiving in nature. They may have asked you to come join them again with the hopes that you would have declined on the basis of there not being up to your skill level.

These types of boards become freaking boring if not for a few mix-up meows. Give me creds for at least keeping things interesting.
There is a meow and there is a meow. Some meows are better left un-meowed. Anyway, this thread has as much life left as a Walking Dead zombie shot in the head, thrice. Cindy, time for a new thread! And when that happens: jc40, can I please reply in your stead? I know exactly what you are going to say

No, no you're not anti-Cindy. No, not at all. Not one bit. Nope. Uh-uh.

Your idea of "keeping things real" is coming up with absurd possibilities that have no connection to real life?

I said they "may have". I did NOT say that it was definitely the case.

There's nothing absurd about it unless YOU can definitely say what the other people were thinking.

But I shouldn't be surprised at your attitude given how you wrote in another post that you would mock your own playing partner for his attire.

Hell yes I will make fun of a teammate for wearing long pants on a 95 degree day. (We actually do have a guy on the team who does this because he doesn't think he looks good in shorts) And I will be shouting "suns out, guns out!" if they are wearing a sleeveless shirt. This is just part of the team dynamic we have and people are still going to go out afterwards for drinks to laugh about it all.

I would also make fun of someone who called a person to play pickup tennis all the while HOPING that they would say no. But since I don't think that anyone would actually do something so absurd I haven't had the opportunity to do so.

OK, so your first case of making fun of a teammate is all in good-natured fun. I think so long as your teammates are cool with it, then it's all good.

In the second case, even though I agree that someone who called a person to play tennis all the while hoping that they would say no is in poor taste, I would NOT make fun of them for doing so.

But that's just me. I believe in treating others the way I'd want to be treated and do my best to live my life accordingly. I think it's just one of those things that comes easier when I got older and turned 40.

I'm admittedly "old school" about things like that.

I have a friend who always wears long pants and a long sleeve sweatshirt, even if it's 100 degrees in summer. He needs to limit the amount of skin exposed to the sun due to a medical condition - so not something it would be cool to make fun of.

And as it relates to the OP, you can't really know why an opponent is wearing warm-ups or whatever, so no reason to take insult or issue with that.
