He's so biased it's ridiculous. Journalism is certainly a loose term these days.

I think if Murray decided to enter some small clay events he could probably win a few. He really only plays the clay masters+ Barcelona

I think Peter Bodo is asking the right questions. Whenever Nadal has a dramatic loss he seems to flee the ATP Tour. Remember 2009 when Nadal lost to Soderling his parents were also having marital problems and almost divorced. Nadal's parents have since gotten back together but his personal problems were more the reason he missed Wimbledon in 2009 despite being the defending champion.
Nadal probably had knee problems but I sense his problems are more personal and emotional. I doubt Nadal is going to tell the media the truth but I think something happened in his personal life and he probably had a crisis of self confidence too. |

What people see about Nadal is not who he really is but his obsessive fans will never agree with this point. These people think Nadal is perfect, and he never lies, and he never spins stories to suit his own interests. These fans don't realize Nadal has a brand to sell and a product he isn't just a tennis star he's a huge international celebrity who has an image he is desperately trying to keep private and maintain. I am not so sure, the tennis media a lot of those journalists are actually very tacky people they are "fans" of a lot of these tennis stars they don't ask the tough questions they aren't objective. When's the last time some in the media attacked the McEnroe brothers? Patrick McEnroe is the worst example of neoptism in tennis industry ever. Especially Patrick McEnroe he's the worst tennis commentator on USA television he has a conflict of interest because he works at the USTA. Where are the articles asking Patrick McEnroe for him to resign from the USTA? Mary Joe Fernandez husband is Roger Federer's agent and I think she also has close ties to Maria Sharapova too. Ever watch a match with Sharapova and listen to Mary Joe Fernandez commentate? These so called commentators and journalists are not objective enough. In order to get access to tennis stars like Nadal the media have to go through his PR machine and managers. I think the public only sees what Nadal and his PR people want us to see. But it would take a serious journalist someone that can spot BS and call it for what it is. Last edited by Amelie Mauresmo : 02-05-2013 at 04:41 PM. |

I dont like Bodo but he is spot on when it comes to this article. You need to be stupid to believe Rafa and his team anymore.
I also think Rafa isnt humble or something as we fans try to portray him.He is insecure. Thats why he always plays this stupid mind games. There were many times Rafa and his team exaggerated Rafas injury problems.I dont mean he never suffered any problems or something but it is pretty clear Rafa loves to create safe heaven for himself. When he lose because he has problems either physically or personal problems. When he wins this is even more special because he also played with pain and problems but still managed to win.OHHH what a fighter. It is no different from any of us who try to persuade ourselves we are OK to play tennis even when we are not feeling well. |

Nadal has been (perhaps allowed himself to be) overmanaged by the PR machine. He is just an insecure, uneducated kid.
He might pull an Agassi later in his life: kicks Toni off his life, leaves his GF, shaves his head and returns to the tour and wins a few matches, takes some writing classes and writes another book on his own.

I guess most tennis fans just want to believe the knee injury story because that's the PR story Nadal and his team have said. Yet I've seen photos of Nadal swimming, and doing all kinds of social things smiling for the camera. This knee injury story might have some veracity but Nadal is lying and the media need to dig a bit deeper to find out what's really going on with him. Where is Lynn Barber? I would love to see Lynn Barber write another essay about Nadal she's the only journalist who really was able to peel beneath the surface and expose the facade about him. So that's why I believe Nadal's problems are probably a mixture of physical, emotional, and probably psychological too. If the knee injury is so serious why not just have surgery? Nadal is a multi millionaire sports medicine has improved so much in the past ten to fifteen years so why doesn't he just get the injury fixed?
