Excellent guide - but the issue asking folks on this board about grips can get dicey - you have folks who use a certain grip size only cause their favorite pro. Like all the Nadal fans grabbing 1/4 grips and copying what he does.......bet if they truly measured their hands they would find they need 3/8 or even 1/2 like just about every normal sized adult.

True and some is preference. I just wondered if this grip looked ok or obviously too big.

If she can slide her index finger in there as in the example and her elbow does not hurt she's fine. Just know that when diagnosing tennis elbow one of the first causes is grip size. At her age if you stick with the diagram I provided you can't go wrong. No need to experiment with grip size until after they mature.

String and racquet stiffness along with HH and lighter, longer frames are the major TE causes. But if a player has TE and makes the equipment corrections, follows treatment/rehab and does not improve, checking to see if grip size extremes exist is far from bad advice.

Hey gpl... my son plays with a 4 1/4 modified with a Babolat Skin feel replacement grip and a Tournagrip over that. End result is something a tad shy of original size. How big are his hands?

I am not sure what lines on the palm to line it up to. He does not have real small hands. The reason for all of this is the fact that he is changing rackets and the 4 1/4 is in stock. The 4 1/8 is not in stock. He really needs it by this weekend.

Yeah, I wouldn't know how to measure either... I go by comparing his hands to mine and the "finger on the bevel" method described above. I always though it best to err on the larger side with the grip (within reason) to avoid him squeezing to hard and playing tight.

The one Finger breadth to fit between the space is an easy measurement you'll find at TW and several references. It works well.
If you are pressed to get 4 1/4, it is 1/8 inch bigger than 4 1/8. You can rip the 4 1/4 original grip off and use a thinner grip to wrap the handle. If you can wait, then wait from the manufact. for 4 1/8. Have you checked several vendors yet? |

Agree that sizing on TW is good. As one with elbow issues, have not experienced grip size as a factor. I went one size down w/ my grip a few years ago. The smaller grip puts more pressue on hand and wrist so be careful. Smaller grip allows me to generate more topspin, a little easier to "turn the hand". Would love to use poly strings as that makes a big difference getting tight spin- but they bother my elbow. Light head heavy racquets w/ poly strings not easy on elbow.
