When hitting a volley do you like to have a tight grip on the racquet or a loose grip?

FIRM grip.
Not tight, or you lose movement, touch, and feel. Not loose, unless you already planned to hit a drop volley. If you KNOW you are going to hit a drive volley, deep and penetrating, then a tight grip is OK for that particular shot. |

When you're in the ready position 'waiting' to volley you need to be relaxed but alert. I loose grip is fine here. At contact with the ball though squeeze so you have a firm grip and a firm wrist. If as LeeD says you're executing a drop volley then relax the hand but you'll still need a firm wrist.

Make sure it's a continental grip.

It depends a lot on what you're trying to do with it (placement) and how hard the opponent hits it. If the opponent crushes it likely you'll have to have a looser grip to absorb more power otherwise you'll spray the ball long.
If he hits soft you'll have a firmer grip if you intend to volley deep.

this one talks about the feel of volley, where you allow the ball to knock the racket head back. this promotes the correct grip pressure. |

Firm continental grip (base knuckle of the index finger on panel 2).

Just firm, not tight as you are squeezing the handle. Just like the way you handle your serve. Some guy may prefer to hold in the mid handle to have a more firm and stable volley. When you opponent hit a very hard passing shot, just tighten up a little and deliver a punch volley. Soften your grip when trying a drop volley.

Another net situation where a guy hits a soft shot I'll compensate by actually tightening my grip thereby generating more of my own power/using more of his to hit a volley. Volleying has a lot to do with how firmly you grip the handle and is varies constantly.
