That's what Becker meant with his "lull to sleep" comments on Mecir's game, like Mecir would trade steady paced groundstrokes with his opponent, and then suddenly move up several gears in a flash to hit the winning volley.

I know. That's where his low-key, laidback persona paid off.

Yes, correction.

Borg looked many times like he was gonna be off the event at the first round.1977 vs Edmondson ( what an unbelievable opponent for the first round, the AO champion), 1978 Big Vic Amaya, 1979 Tom Gorman, 1980 Rod Frawley...a great grass courter who´d reach the semis a year later.

Maybe, the best way to summon it up is saying that you cannot play like mecir, unless you´re mecir...

True. Enthralled with Mecir, I tried to emulate his footwork, speed, and laidback style by barely picking up my feet off the court, trying to glide around a lot.

To put it succinctly, all I ended up doing was falling flat on my face, after tripping over my own feet.

Mecir was known as the "Swede Killer" because of his overall great record against Swedish players, including Wilander, Edberg, Jarryd, Nystrom.

But, he lost some big matches, when it mattered most. In 1988 when Edberg won his first Wimbledon title, he was down 0-2 sets to Mecir in the SFs. And, someone already mentioned the 1987 USO vs. Wilander.

Great player, but just didn't have that "something" extra to get him to that higher level of Slam champion.

I always forget how often Wilander came to net. Look at some of the stats from his Slam matches, and it's pretty amazing. I always remember him as a patient baseliner, relying outlasting his opponent and making great passing shots - which is all true. But, a big percentage of his winners were from moving in, and he did it regularly in a lot of matches. No wonder he won Slams on all surfaces. Complete player. Yeah, these clips are great.

I wonder if Wilander could have more Slams if he could have stayed consistently motivated after 1988.

Those McEnroe Nike Shoes he's wearing in these clips were all the rage among my tennis peers. Lol. Yes, I'm old (40).

Wilander was smart and self confident to move in in strategic points
Sometimes he' d get bored and came in often and if that didnot
pay off no problem: stay back and get the job done

Wilander had losing records against Lendl, Becker, Cash and Mecir. Do you know of any others?

McNamara was a nemesis for a young Wilander. What about Agassi? Todd Martin?

Carl-Uwe Steeb was 3-2 vs Wilander.
Berger 2-0
Mancini 3-0
Agassi was 5-2
Sampras 2-1
