Thanks for sharing. Last fall I stumbled upon and read a book called "The Testosterone Plan" that was put together by the editors of Men's Health magazine. I followed the 9 week diet and weight plan over this winter and experienced results similar to the subjects in the book (dramatic).
The concept was raising testosterone naturually much like the linked article, worked very well for me. I am in shape and ready for tennis season! |

Why in the world would anyone who doesn't have an abnormally low testosterone level want to increase it?? The relationship between higher testosterone levels and development (and more rapid spread) of prostate cancer has been established in so many studies already that nobody seriously questions it. (Conversely, slowing the spread of prostate cancer by lowering testosterone or blocking its receptors is standard care for some years). The sine qua non of hormones like testosterone is that there are feedback loops that maintain their levels within a narrow range. Changing that is asking for trouble.

Yeah, I'm partially serious. Weren't many of them developed in order to give the benefits of testosterone without the possibly bad side effects? I would guess that most people would want higher T-levels because of benefits either with athletic performance or sex drive. Professional athletics is rife with steroid abuse precisely because it benefits muscle development and recovery times. And isn't prostate cancer something that would mostly be an issue in very old age? |

^^ The incidence of prostate cancer starts to increase considerably after age 45. I have three friends who were diagnosed around age 50. Two of them are doing well and one will likely not be alive next year. More worrisome is that the cases diagnosed in younger patients tend to be more aggressive, probably because the very elderly have lower testosterone leves, so their cancers are less aggressive.

^^ what's the question. Testosterone blockers prolong survival, high levels lead to higher disease rates.

I think the key word is "naturally." Injections, supplements, steroids etc were for not for me and I wouldn't got there. But eating certain ratios of macronutrients at the right time of day and exercising in a way to promote natural testosterone level increases helped me lose fat in my "love handles," gain strength and increase energy levels in a cohort period of time. There were/are other benefits that made me aware of the testosterone but that would be tmi for this board.

^^ you have to consider what testosterone range you're looking at. Most of the data you cite indicates that boosting testosterone in men WHO HAVE LOW TESTOSTERONE LEVELS is not associated with increased risk of prostate cancer. That seems reasonable. My original point here was that trying to increase your level if it's NOT low may be associated with risk, and there is some support for that. Also, pooled data across all ages may obscure findings.

"Boosting testosterone" will in all likelihood not have the desired results( lower body fat, better recovery etc) the real measurement that you are looking for to see those results is an increase in free testosterone levels. Most natural testosterone boosters do not increase free levels. That being said, I have not seen this wealth of studies that are being referred to with the link to prostate cancer. Exogenous hormones and potent androgens have been linked to benign prostate hypertrophy in otherwise healthy adults but I have never seen those results with a natural increase in levels in any study.

Yes, the risk of exposure wearing Bermuda shorts or in extreme cases, capri pants.
