Nah, Rafa's level went up from this match. 2008 was an insane year for him, especially in terms of the displays of his sheer physicality. He only broke down after the Olympics, and I suspect that was more mental than anything else.

I don't see any appreciable difference between the way he played in this match and the way he usually plays, other than his much more frequent use of the drop shot in 2007. He probably took a few more wild swings in 2007 as well, since he was an up-and-coming young guy with nothing to lose, but he's still generally as aggressive as he's always been.

Wait....wasn't this the weak era?

Great match! I remember watching this live the day after Canas beat Federer.

That match has Rafa's greatest backhand shot ever imho. He just blasts it! I remember watching that match with a couple of friends, and we were all stunned with the power and trajectory of that shot going at about 1000mph! LOL

Seriously. There's all this talk about 2007 being part of the "Weak Era". Man..If tennis still looked like this, I'd be all about the "weak era" coming back.

some of those points are absolutely insane. the chasing down shots and returning overheads. hitting 6 winners in a row isnt enough to win the point!
