Yeah, Johnny can't seem to look either his guests, his audience, or the camera in the eye -- this is a basic requirement for television. Mac is too introspective and moody to be a host. He is a his best as a side kick when he is able to interject insightful commentary while allowing the rest of the show go on. Does anyone remember the day a year or two ago when USA let Mac loose on the air by himself? It was a nightmare!

THis 'talk show' is simply another in the long line of his desperate attempts to remain in the public eye. He must be just about the most insecure being on the planet, as he is perpetually seeking fame.
I believe I actually respect Connors more, because, as much of an obnoxious egomaniac Jimbo is, he's at least staying clear of the media now. But McEnroe is simply a media wh*re - which, incidentally, is something he has always claimed to despise. Someone please give this hypocrite a mirror... |

duece-i think you've described johnny mac to T, although i dont see connors as an obnoxious egomaniac. and think he proving it by staying out of the public eye. connors was an intense competitor who boiled over when things didnt go right, and a rebel that probably suited his era in the 70's.

Something else also comes to mind... Aside from the establishments (Letterman, Leno, MAYBE Conan...), does anyone else think that Primtime/Late Nite Talk Shows are just out of vogue int he US? Sure, they're still popular in almost every other country, but I just can't help but feel that they are no longer relevant in the US and furthermore, they always seem to be the last ditch effort for stardom for a lot of expired contracts.
To be honest, I way prefer McEnroe to Carson Daly's talk show. Heck, if we stretch to daytime (where the establishment is pretty much Oprah)... Didn't White America's favorite black man (Wayne Brady) lose his show too? I heard Ellen started off well, but it just seems like I never hear about it unless I'm watching it. Another MTV Graveyard in Ananda Lewis (who seemed like she sometimes had decent interviews on MTV *cringe--can't believe I'm saying this* but obviously couldn't interview on her show either). There were once people named Ricky Lake, Montel, Jerry Springer (though some would say he's immortal, not me), Geraldo, Donahue, etc... in the days when talk shows were in vogue. But it just seems like talk shows = desperate struggle and stardom graveyard to me these days anyways. Heck did daytime talk beyond Oprah sort of die with Rosie? Okay... I know I've been in college too long if I could name all of those talk shows.... But anyways... back to primetime... can anyone even imagine a successful new primtime talk show? To be honest, I'm surprised Conan and Craig Killborn (as much as I like Craig's awkward humor...) are still around. Anyone know how Jimmy Kimmel's show is doing? I'm guessing it might be an exception as one of the best if not the best of the new talk shows that have premiered in the few years. Anyone have any ideas of how a new talkshow would even be "good?" I'm not excusing McEnroe... but the conversation has me thinking that outside of the establishments, primetime talk shows are just dead in the US. -Chanchai |

Talk show ???????????? you mean it isn't an hour long paid political announcement by whiney liberal northeastern I hate Bush democrats. Mac will gone come November. I think they threw him out there to balance out the Dennis "I ruined Monday Night Football" Miller Show. At least Dennis is funny sometimes.

Has McEnroe had any tennis players on his show yet? I know Andy Roddick called in once. Maybe it would be more interesting if McEnroe talked more about tennis since that's what he's most comfortable with. It would be cool if he had on Jimmy Connors.

Did anyone see Jimmy Kimmel Live last night. Josie Maran was on the show and poor jimmy couldn;t keep a conversation going for his life. He kept starring at her assets and she was calling him on it, it was brutal!!!

I guess I never really considered that he could actually get better...but yeah, you're right, he could. I just saw one of the shows when he had John Cusack on during the DNC and Mac just seemed to be struggling to find convrsation...of course so did Cusack...

i am the trouble maker of the double trouble team expressing the opposing view...
my partner and i share this logon...as tennis fanantics thank goodness for mac! lighten up!...we created america so we could have different opinions and be able to express them ...what ever happened to that concept 'celebrate diversity'? now my rant isnt about mac's lameness..yes, he is! but you go mac! let there be aplace of 'becoming' and may all opposing views be expressed until we can all see the oneness in all things- where all can see the dichotomy, the irony, the play of life, the game is life... let us express it...! let us figure out how to win i was excited about mac's show because tv in general is so unsatisfactory i think he intends to get the truth out-for instance when he goes off talking about rupert murdock...he seems driven about his agenda...and thats ok...everyone else is too that is just my hit you go mac ...say it for all of us wanna be guitar players, tennis pros, tv talk show hosts living the high life, who would like a shot at having a voice on international tv!! people who want to see the free country restored to its rightful place an example of equanimity i enjoyed the variety of figures he is getting on and dont know if he can learn in time how to be a good host ...before they ax it potentially but i do think it a good ploy in the current political climate he's open to suggestions on his website so go there and tell him... and hey ...thanks to dennis miller for making me laugh at everything thats insane in this world ! i am for social change...and the only way it happens is to shake it up and he may not be the best example of tennis but its really great for tennis, i think ....its about time!!! i have seen a little bit of another show called top spin... thats pretty awesome too. they give you some insight into the pros life off the courts and what its like to travel all the time with the schedules they have and such grow tennis grow! |

Rack Im!!!
TROUBLE!! Very Nice Post! Although I agree with only about 5% of what you wrote, (news flash cuz, without a racquet in his hand, McEnroe really blows) passionate, well-thought-posts are quite welcome here. Posts like yours are far better than most of the TW knuckleheads who simply repeat what they have heard somewhere else. Welcome, keep up the great work!!!!!!!!!! |
