Instead of starting the USO championship match on time, CBS showed an extra 20 minutes of NFL post-game show. Ridiculous! Outrageous!

Well not to defend CBS or the NFL, but it IS the kickoff to the football season and of course there are more fans tuning into the NFL than the US Open. I think CBS could have done a better job covering the Open this year, but I am thankful for USA too.

a few more noncompetitive US Open semi's and finals and it'll be shown on tape delay like the NBA finals in the early 70's. Federer's great but watching him demolish people on TV is really boring.

Football is the most popular spectator sport in the US. Monday night football has the highest television ratings of ANY program. Tennis is never going to preempt an ongoing NFL game ever.
Tennis otoh is barely on the radar even in when the biggest US event is going on. Just yesterday morning I watched 1 sportscaster quizzing 2 other sportscasters on all their picks for the upcoming games this weekend. They were mostly going over football and baseball. Then all the sudden one of the guys threw out Kuznetsova or Dementieva -who will win? Both of other guys were totally dumbfounded and obviously didn't even know what sport he was talking about. Then when they were told the sport is tennis, they both say I like Kournikova |

Goober is right. Tennis is this country does not draw crowds. Worldwide the game is popular, yes....and even the US Open rakes in millions of sponsorship and revenue dollars. It would be interesting to see who would draw a larger audience in Queens...the Mets or the US Open (if the Mets were playoff contenders) Even last weekend, the Mets game drew more TV time in NY than the Open's five seconds of coverage on the local news.

In USA TODAY, we are alphabetically last under "Other Sports". Sadly, that sounds about right.
