Default pros serving speed

i have come to a conclusion about how pros serve so fast. they do indeed serve above average, but at the tournements that are put on tv, they change the speed guns to make them seem faster, when in reality, it is not. Anyone here could potentially serve 130+ on "their" speed guns

Well sort of, the pros radar guns are usually catching the ball earlier and more accurately than many recreational guns so you could gain a bit more speed. Having said that...I take it you haven't actually used a radar much because when you actually bring one out...the percentage of people who think they can hit 110mph that actually CAN hit 110mph turns out to be amusingly small....

I've watched many many a player flail away....85mph, 87mph, 85mph, 92mph, 73mph.... while it's fun to administer the reality check...I feel a bit for them when they realize their flat serve is about as fast as the William's second serve...

This post belongs with the ones where posters rate themselves 5.0 and say they could take a few games from #100 in the world player. Please guys just go to the tournaments sit courtside on a small court you'll see #200 versus #110 playing and realize you couldnt hit their basic rally ball. Its really not that hard to get a groundspass for US open. These posts are getting tedious. Its like if you watch an occasional marathon on TV and say, gee I dont see what makes these guys so good, I could probably give em a good race. yeah tennis players arent 6' 10 solid blocks of muscle but theyre some of the worlds most fit atheletes with unbelievable hand eye coordination.

Im getting sick of people telling other people what they can and cannot do as a tennis player on these boards.

I would rate myself a 5.5 player at best and have gotten aces, games etc on 6.5 level 200-300 ranked ATP players, in tournament situations. If you hit big, with accuracy, youre gonna win points. If you hit a line at 120, its gonna be hard to get back if at all, unless you telegraph it.

Also those Speedcheck things are going to read about 10-20 MPH slower than an ATP/WTA radar, which is coming off the racquet inches away compared to like 20 ft away on the Speedcheck.

I even saw a post here of someone talking about Roddick being on morning TV (Regis/Kathy Lee) and they had a Speedcheck which Roddick could only get like 110 on.

Im in agreeance with Shaolin on this one. It's not anyone else's place to say what someone can or cannot do.

However, I DO agree somewhat with what callitut said. This morning, I played a set against Ben Williamson, who at 18 made it to the quarters of the Junior nationals. In the past, I have beaten nationally ranked kids, so I though i was going to be in for a tough, but not absurd set.

Score: 6-1. A clobboring. Granted, most of my points were just me trying to be absurdly aggressive, as Ben loooooves hitting rally shots, then annihilating you off angles from the corners. Most of my points came from serves or heavy forhands down the middle, and an occasional serve and volley.

The message: YES, there is a huge difference between an average player and a nationally ranked player, but no, it isnt somone's job to point out to people that won't ever make it.

As BB said, and I am completely convinsed that he is correct, "Anyone can make it to a 5.0 level with hard work".
