so does this mean their tennis program will be affected next year ? they were power house this year so this could shift the power in that region come next season

yes looks like their tennis will only get 3 scholarships for the next 2-3 years, that is not a good thing by far for a sport that already has a limited amount of scholarships.

But, on the flip side, since there aren't a lot of scholarships to begin with, the reduction, and thus the impact, isn't as much. Going from 4.5 to 3.0 isn't the drastic cut of going from 6.0 to 3.0.

I wonder if schools work around existing limits by simply offering good financial aid. Not full scholarship-level aid, but substantially reducing the the cost of tuition and fees via aid. I guess the problem is that doing so would be overseen by the financial aid office, not the athletic department, so the player would have to qualify for that aid. Though, I'm betting some schools at least have some shady, backdoor way of funneling non-scholarship money to players and have it look like everyday financial aid.

I'm sure there are plenty innocent mistakes made that violate NCAA rules, but for Pepperdine to self impose these kinds of penalties makes the above statement seem a little far fetched.

I think this is the same violation. They discovered improper accounting of partial scholarships right before the end of spring semester of 2011, and dropped out of their conference and NCAA tournaments for the sports affected. This latest announcement sounds like the result of a year-long audit of the whole department that has probably been going on since that time.

Here's the details directly from NCAA, seems they are down to 3.37 scholarships for mens tennis for next 3 years. They keep their 2006 NCAA title (infraction occurred later) but vacate WCC Championship titles from 2008-2010. More specifics here...
