If the competition is less, than I play my kid up. If the conditions aren't perfect, it's a great learning experience as there will be situations where the courts are lumpy or not level. If the court is dangerous, than that's another learning opportunity. I recall my kid telling an official the court was full of holes and they moved them to another court. So I guess it all depends on how you look at things.

Playing up is indeed an option for some. My son is 17, so he's in the highest age bracket.

The dangerous situation of which I'm thinking occurred because the official glanced at the court and declared it okay. It was 2:00 on a clay court that had been used without watering since 8:00 on a hot day in July in the south. Courts were full; the tournament was running behind because doubles players had been scheduled to begin doubles matches 30 minutes before their singles matches were to begin. The whole tournament was such a hassle that my son just decided not to play in it this year.

Chalkflewup, it seems that you're more experienced than me, so I'm curious as to what you would have advised your child to do when he saw the condition of the court.

In our state level 5 is the lowest level. My 9 year old won a local level 5 losing only 2 games in all of his matches. I will not play him in any more level 5 tournaments. He will no longer get points in them and it is really not fair to the beginner kids. He has played over 90 tournament matches in the last year. This level is for kids who are new to tournament play.
